The incident took place at approximately 15:25 near the intersection of Broadway and Oro Street, according to Lt. Joe Crawford of the El Cajon Police Department.

Witnesses noted the BMW was reportedly engaged in a speed contest with another vehicle prior to the crash. The driver of the BMW, identified as 19-year-old Jesse Hernandez from El Cajon, was trapped inside the wreckage. Despite rescue efforts, Hernandez was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital shortly after being extricated.

The two individuals inside the box truck sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene. Lt. Crawford indicated that excessive speed appears to be a significant factor in the crash, as several witnesses confirmed the BMW was racing another car before the collision.
