The Oscar-shortlisted short film The Pearl Comb has officially debuted on Disney+ in Europe. This release coincides with the announcement that double Academy Award nominee Miranda Richardson and Oscar-nominated producer David Lancaster have joined the project as executive producers. The film, a gothic fantasy directed by Ali Cook, has garnered attention for its compelling narrative and impressive festival run.

Set in 1893 England, The Pearl Comb tells the story of a fisherman’s wife who becomes the first person to successfully cure tuberculosis. The plot thickens as a skeptical doctor, determined to disprove her achievements, embarks on an investigation that reveals the mysterious origins of her healing powers. This film draws inspiration from the true story of the first women to study medicine in the UK, expertly blending gothic elements with historical context.

Richardson expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, “Ali Cook has created something truly special — a film that feels both honest and timeless.” She praised Cook for his ability to weave together fantasy, drama, mystery, and horror while maintaining a masterful tone throughout the film.

Lancaster, known for his work on acclaimed films such as Whiplash and Nightcrawler, echoed these sentiments. He remarked, “Ali Cook has pulled off a fabulously freaky fable — it feels as if Robert Eggers were channeling Guillermo del Toro.” His comments highlight the film’s unique blend of myth and reality, empathy and malevolence, leading to a thrilling conclusion.

The film features performances from actors Beatie Edney (known for Highlander), Clara Paget (from Too Much), and Simon Armstrong (who appeared in Game of Thrones).

In addition to The Pearl Comb, Disney+ has added several other Oscar-shortlisted short films to its service. Among these are A Friend Of Dorothy, featuring Miriam Margolyes and Stephen Fry, and Retirement Plan, which stars Domhnall Gleeson and includes contributions from the actor as an executive producer.

As the film continues to attract attention, audiences can now enjoy this remarkable story of courage and innovation on Disney+, showcasing the power of storytelling in a historical context. The addition of high-profile executive producers further emphasizes the film’s quality and potential impact in the realm of short cinema.
