David Grissom Honored at 2025 Cullman Veterans Hall of Fame
David William Grissom, a distinguished veteran of the United States Army, was inducted into the 2025 Cullman Veterans Hall of Fame in recognition of his remarkable service and commitment to his country. Grissom’s military journey commenced on February 14, 1968, when he was drafted and began his training as a Radio Operator and Communication Technician at Fort Benning, Georgia. His path took a significant turn upon his arrival in Vietnam in July 1968, where he was reassigned as an Infantry Ranger.
After undergoing two weeks of in-country Ranger training, Grissom joined Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Rangers. His first combat experience occurred during the Battle of Loc Ninh, a critical engagement that resulted in the loss of General Keith Ware, a Medal of Honor recipient. Throughout his tour, Grissom completed 74 combat insertions and earned the Air Medal for his bravery and resilience.
During the Mekong Delta campaign, Grissom collaborated with Navy Riverine forces, receiving the Bronze Star and the Combat Infantryman Badge. His courage was further recognized when he sustained injuries from a mortar explosion in the Plain of Reeds, leading to his receipt of the Purple Heart. While recuperating, he served in the Tactical Operations Command, awaiting top-secret clearance for a transfer into military intelligence.
Once cleared, Grissom was assigned to the 9th Military Intelligence Division, where he conducted surveillance operations along the Cambodian border. His unit faced a severe challenge when their compound in Thu Thua was overrun. Grissom and his comrades destroyed sensitive equipment before being airlifted from the rooftop. Remarkably, he returned to Thu Thua the following day to resume operations, demonstrating his unwavering dedication.
Grissom concluded his Vietnam tour among the “First 500” soldiers to return home, participating in a welcome parade for new veterans in Tacoma, Washington. He completed his military service at Fort Hood, Texas, and his commendations include the Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and several others, reflecting his extensive contributions to military operations.
After his honorable discharge, Grissom returned to Cullman, Alabama, and worked at the Bendix Westinghouse factory. In 1971, seeking a more impactful career, he joined the State of Alabama Narcotics Investigation team as an undercover investigator. He later served with the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department and the Decatur Police Department, where his exceptional service earned him recognition as Alabama’s Young Law Enforcement Officer of the Year in 1974.
Grissom’s commitment to supporting fellow veterans is evident through his active membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Disabled American Veterans (DAV), and the American Legion. He assists veterans and their families in securing benefits and provides transportation for medical appointments. His advocacy efforts include engaging with Congressman Robert Aderholt and other officials to address veterans’ needs.
His community involvement extends to being a member of the Cullman County Republican Party, where he has served since 1980, and a lifelong member of St. John’s Church in Cullman. Grissom frequently speaks at public schools in Cullman County, sharing his experiences and honoring the sacrifices of fellow veterans.
In 1979, after marrying and starting a family, Grissom transitioned from law enforcement to entrepreneurship. He established Wholesale Jewelers International, expanding from a single store in Cullman to several locations across Alabama. After retiring from the jewelry business in 2004, he launched Grissom Sales, focusing on tractors, trailers, and farm equipment. Today, he operates Diamond Plaza Rental Properties from his base in Cullman.
David Grissom’s life exemplifies a profound dedication to service, resilience, and community leadership. Whether on the battlefield, in law enforcement, or through his advocacy for veterans, he has consistently demonstrated valor and integrity. In his personal life, he enjoys hunting, collecting firearms, and spending quality time with his family, reflecting a life dedicated to both country and community.
