GOP Ramps Up Attacks on Protesters Amid Anti-Trump Sentiment

UPDATE: In a striking escalation of tensions, GOP leaders are ramping up their attacks on protesters over rising anti-Trump sentiment, according to Indivisible organizer Ezra Levin. During an interview with CNN anchor Dana Bash, Levin revealed that Congressional Republicans are increasingly worried about the impact of peaceful protests across the nation.
The discussion comes amidst reports from the Wall Street Journal indicating that the Trump administration is planning a significant overhaul of the IRS, targeting groups like Indivisible that organize protests against the administration. Levin expressed concern about the implications, stating, “He’s already got a list of potential targets… I can’t imagine that Indivisible would not be on it.”
In a direct response to Bash’s query about preparations for potential government crackdowns, Levin stated, “What do they say? First, they ignore you. Then they laugh at you. Then they fight you. Then you win. We’re one step from winning.” He emphasized that the GOP’s aggressive stance reflects their fear of growing public dissent.
Levin highlighted that the primary fear of authoritarian regimes, including the current GOP leadership, is the power of peaceful protests. “The number one thing they fear is peaceful protests, because authoritarian regimes depend on convincing the populace that they are alone and weak,” he said. “It is really troubling, and it’s unconstitutional and it’s illegal. But we’re not going to back down.”
Footage aired by Bash showed various GOP figures, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, labeling protesters as the “Pro-Hamas wing” of the Democratic Party. Levin responded to these attacks, questioning the timing of such escalated rhetoric. “The question is, why are they coming at us now? They are worried that they are losing their grip on power,” he noted.
Levin also stressed that the GOP’s fear is rooted in the belief that public opinion is shifting against them. “They’re scared that people in blue states, red states, and purple states are going to realize the public doesn’t support them. I think what they’re doing is backfiring,” he added.
As evidence of this growing movement, Levin cited over 2,600 protest events planned across the country, with more participants expected than during the June “No Kings” protests. “Our numbers are skyrocketing,” he declared, underscoring the increasing mobilization against the current administration.
This urgent update highlights a critical moment for both protesters and GOP leaders as tensions continue to rise in the lead-up to significant events across the nation. The impact of these developments could reshape the political landscape as more Americans engage in activism against perceived authoritarianism in government.
