Beloved Community Leader John Paul Kirk Passes Away at 94
The community of Redondo Beach, California, mourns the loss of John Paul Kirk, Sr., who passed away peacefully at the age of 94 on December 9, 2025. Surrounded by his loving family, including his wife of 73 years, Alice Kirk, and their three children, Kirk’s life is celebrated for its impact on family, friends, and the community.
A Life of Service and Adventure
Born on March 14, 1931, in Ashland, Alabama, John was the youngest of ten siblings. He maintained close ties with his family throughout his life, returning to Ashland frequently. After graduating from Clay County High School in 1949, he unexpectedly enlisted in the United States Air Force while seeking information about the Army Air Corps, now known as the Air Force. His military service included a teaching position at Amarillo Air Force Base, where he taught aircraft electronics.
During his time in Texas, John met Alice, whom he married on December 27, 1952. The couple welcomed three children: John, Jr., Kathy, and Rebecca, and later expanded their family with ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, with another on the way.
After his military service, John pursued further education, earning an associate degree from Southern Tech. He later completed a Bachelor of Science in Professional Aeronautics from Embry Riddle University at the age of 76. John’s passion for flying began in Texas, where he took lessons and eventually obtained a small plane pilot’s license that he held for 50 years.
Professional Journey and Community Involvement
John’s professional journey began in the oil industry, leading him and Alice to Bogotá, Colombia, where they built lifelong friendships. Upon their return to the United States, they settled in Torrance, California, where John established a successful financial planning firm. He dedicated over 50 years to helping clients with their investments before retiring.
Throughout his life, John demonstrated an unwavering commitment to community service. He held leadership roles in several organizations, including serving as president of the South Bay Sunrise Rotary Club and as chairman of the board for the Torrance YMCA. He was also actively involved with Toastmasters International and The Arc South Bay, among others.
John and Alice joined the First United Methodist Church of Redondo Beach in 1961, where John made significant contributions, especially in establishing the church’s endowment fund. He chaired various boards and committees, earning deep respect and affection from fellow congregants.
John Kirk is survived by his wife, Alice; children John Kirk (Mindy), Kathy McCandless (Richard), and Rebecca Kirk; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His legacy of love, service, and community engagement will continue to inspire those who knew him.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on January 10, 2026, at First United Methodist Church, located at 243 S. Broadway, Redondo Beach, CA 90277. Friends, family, and community members are invited to celebrate his remarkable life and contributions.
