Visualize Sound Waves with Innovative Camera Under $200
A new innovation allows enthusiasts to visualize sound waves using a custom camera setup for under $200. Developed by inventor PlasmatronX, this project employs a unique imaging technique that captures sound waves through the manipulation of air density variations caused by pressure fluctuations.
The innovative method is rooted in Schlieren imaging, a technique traditionally used to visualize air currents. Unlike conventional setups that focus on thermal currents, PlasmatronX’s design utilizes a concave mirror to enhance the refraction of air densities affected by sound waves. This approach makes it possible to see the very waves that our ears interpret as sound.
To achieve this visualization, a standard camera must have an exceptionally fast shutter speed, which typically comes at a high price. Instead, PlasmatronX has devised a more accessible solution by synchronizing audio and optical capture systems. This setup requires modifications to audio circuits to eliminate high-pass filters and an overvolted LED flash to create quick strobe effects essential for capturing sound in motion.
