Thwaites Glacier Shakes: Hundreds of Earthquakes Detected
Recent research has revealed troubling seismic activity beneath Antarctica’s Thwaites Glacier, commonly referred to as the Doomsday Glacier. Between 2010 and 2023, scientists detected a total of **362 earthquakes**, primarily occurring in the West Antarctic region. If Thwaites Glacier were to disintegrate, it could lead to sea levels rising by **two to ten feet**, which would have devastating consequences for coastal communities worldwide.
Understanding the Earthquake Activity
Phạm’s research highlights that many of the recorded earthquakes were linked to the calving of icebergs from the glacier into the ocean. The seismic activity detected typically registered around **magnitude 5** on the Richter scale, a level often associated with iceberg calving in warmer regions like Greenland. Yet, the seismic dynamics in Antarctica remain poorly understood due to a lack of comprehensive data.
To address this gap, Phạm developed a specialized algorithm that analyzes wave patterns collected by seismic monitors across Antarctica. His findings indicate that **245 of the 362 earthquakes** originated from Thwaites Glacier, suggesting that the glacier’s melting processes might be accelerating.
The implications of these findings are significant. The Thwaites Glacier acts as a crucial barrier, holding back vast amounts of ice on the West Antarctic ice shelf. If it collapses, it could trigger a domino effect, enabling more ice to flow into the ocean and exacerbating global sea-level rise.
The Call for Enhanced Monitoring
Given the alarming seismic activity, Phạm advocates for the establishment of a dedicated seismic network on the Antarctic continent. This network would allow researchers to closely monitor the glacier’s dynamics, which may evolve rapidly in the coming decades or even years.
