Sundance Day 3: Eccentric Premieres of ‘Wicker’ and ‘The Invite’
The 2026 Sundance Film Festival continues to captivate audiences as it enters its third day, showcasing a diverse lineup of films that blend humor, horror, and social commentary. Audiences were treated to the premiere of Wicker, the highly anticipated film from directors Eleanor Wilson and Alex Huston Fischer, which features a star-studded cast including Olivia Colman and Alexander Skarsgård.
Set in a medieval village, Wicker tells the story of a sardonic fisherwoman who challenges traditional norms by commissioning a husband made of wicker. This quirky historical comedy delves into themes of marriage and societal expectations, promising to deliver both laughter and thought-provoking moments. The film’s unique premise and visual style have already generated buzz among festivalgoers.
Notable attendees at the premiere of The Invite included acclaimed actors Edward Norton, Olivia Wilde, and Seth Rogen. This film, directed by Cathy Yan, satirizes the world of high art and ambition. It stars Natalie Portman as Polina Polinski, a gallerist willing to go to extreme lengths—such as selling a dead body at Art Basel Miami—to maintain her relevance in the art scene. The film’s dark humor and critique of societal pressures resonate strongly in today’s context.
As the day progresses, the festival shifts gears to the visceral with the world premiere of The Undertone. This debut feature from writer-director Ian Tuason stars Nina Kiri as Evy, a paranormal podcast host whose skepticism is challenged by unsettling audio recordings. The film explores the intersection of grief and madness, adding an eerie layer to the festival’s offerings.
Other premieres on January 24 include titles such as Big Girls Don’t Cry, If I Go Will They Miss Me, and Zi, showcasing a range of genres and narratives that reflect current societal issues and personal struggles.
The 2026 Sundance Film Festival runs from January 22 to February 1, 2026, in Park City and Salt Lake City, Utah. The festival will conclude with jury and audience awards presented on January 30 at The Ray Theatre. Attendees can look forward to daily updates as new talent and captivating stories continue to emerge from the festival.
With the excitement building, both seasoned film enthusiasts and newcomers are encouraged to explore the innovative works being showcased, marking a significant moment in the cinematic calendar.
