Archbishop Joseph Raya, a prominent figure in the Melkite Catholic Church and a passionate advocate for social justice, left an indelible mark on communities across the globe. Born in 1951 and baptized shortly thereafter by Father Raya, the author reflects on the significant influence his godfather had on his life and the lives of many others. Father Raya was not only a priest but also a champion for women’s rights, civil rights, and reconciliation between Arab and Jewish communities.

Father Raya, who was born in Zahlé, Lebanon, became a priest in the Melkite tradition after his ordination in Jerusalem on July 20, 1941. His journey as a religious leader took him from teaching in Cairo, Egypt, to serving as an assistant pastor at St. Ann’s Melkite Catholic Church in Woodland Park, New Jersey. There, he met the author’s parents at a church picnic during a pivotal moment when the church was considering using the vernacular for liturgical celebrations instead of Latin or Greek. With guidance from Father Raya, the author’s father translated the Greek liturgy, leading to the creation of the well-known Byzantine Daily Worship, which gained popularity in Melkite churches across the United States.

Advocacy and Leadership in the Face of Adversity

Father Raya’s commitment to social justice was evident during his tenure as pastor of St. George’s Melkite Church in Birmingham, Alabama. He marched alongside the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. three times, enduring violence from the Ku Klux Klan for his unwavering stance on civil rights. His efforts culminated in his elevation to the position of Archbishop of Akko, Haifa, Nazareth, and All Galilee on October 20, 1968, by Patriarch Maximos IV.

In Israel, Archbishop Raya sought to bridge the divide between Arab and Jewish communities, advocating for peace and understanding amid ongoing tensions. His work often put him at odds with certain Vatican officials and segments of both communities, leading to significant challenges. Despite these struggles, he remained devoted to promoting spiritual renewal and forgiveness, emphasizing the importance of love and unity in faith.

During a lecture at Madonna House in Combermere, Ontario, Archbishop Raya shared his vision for peace, stating, “Do you know what the Lord says about peacemakers in the world? They are children of God.” His inspiring words resonated deeply with those who sought to understand the power of compassion and community.

A Personal Reflection on Love and Acceptance

The author’s memories of Father Raya are filled with warmth and joy, recalling how his mother would caution the children not to use him as a trampoline when he arrived for visits. Yet, the moment Father Raya entered their home, laughter and love filled the space as the children leaped into his arms, celebrating his presence. He would joyfully proclaim, “I am home.”

As the world grapples with ongoing issues of racial prejudice, gender inequality, and division among communities, the lessons imparted by Archbishop Raya remain relevant. His belief that those who create beauty and bring comfort contribute to the divine presence in the world continues to inspire efforts toward reconciliation and understanding.

Reflecting on Archbishop Raya’s life, the author poses a poignant question: “Why can’t we all giggle and laugh and use each other as loving trampolines as we welcome each other at our homes and hearts?” His call for unity and kindness serves as a reminder that, despite societal challenges, there is always a need to strive for connection and compassion.

Archbishop Raya’s legacy as a peacemaker and advocate for social justice encourages individuals to continue the work he so passionately pursued. In a world still marked by division, his story urges humanity to keep trying to build bridges of understanding and love, transforming lives through acts of kindness and service.
