Young Engineers Compete in VEX Robotics Showdown in Elizabethtown

Dozens of middle school students showcased their engineering expertise at the VEX Robotics Competition held on March 31, 2024, at Elizabethtown Community and Technical College in Kentucky. The event, known as the Clash of the Robots, featured 29 teams from various schools across the state, all competing in a series of timed matches on a 12 x 12-foot field.

Participants had the opportunity to demonstrate their problem-solving abilities and technical skills by designing and constructing robots that would compete against one another. Among the competitors was James Howl, 16, who is a member of team Asterisk from Louisville. He was seen measuring the height of his robot, ensuring it met the competition specifications.

The event attracted young engineers like Archer England, 12, from Bluegrass Middle School, who was busy applying final touches to his team’s robot. “It’s really exciting to see our hard work come together,” Archer said, illustrating the enthusiasm shared by many participants.

Another competitor, Emilie Osborne from team Iterated, was focused on perfecting her robot just moments before their match. The competition environment buzzed with energy as teams made last-minute adjustments and strategized their approaches for the challenges ahead.

Students from TK Stone Middle School, including Landon Kin, 13, and Zain Ahme, 12, were also in attendance, showcasing their own innovative designs. Their engagement in the competition highlights the growing interest in STEM education among young people.

For Tori Bennett, 14, from West Hardin Middle School, the competition was a chance to apply her learning in a practical setting. She was seen securing her team’s plate number, one of the final preparations before the matches began. “It feels great to compete and see what we can accomplish,” Tori remarked, reflecting the spirit of collaboration and creativity that permeated the event.
