New Musical Celebrates Legacy of Congressman John Lewis
A new musical honoring the life of the late Congressman and civil rights leader John Lewis has debuted, celebrating his legacy and the impact he made on American society. Titled Young John Lewis: Prodigy of Protest, the production is presented by the Mosaic Theater Company and is set to run through May 4, 2024, at the Atlas Performing Arts Center in Washington, D.C. Performances commenced on March 26, 2024, featuring a creative team that includes playwright Psalmayene 24 and director Reginald L. Douglas.
This musical focuses on the formative years of Lewis, specifically from ages 18 to 28, providing insight into the events that shaped his commitment to social justice. The narrative is informed by the tragic murder of Emmett Till, which served as a catalyst for Lewis’s journey into activism. The production highlights his role in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and his collaboration with prominent figures such as Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the fight for civil rights, culminating in his long tenure in Congress.
With original music composed by Kokayi, a Grammy-nominated artist and Guggenheim Fellow, the musical aims to resonate with audiences on both emotional and intellectual levels. The show seeks to inspire a generation, emphasizing that individual actions can lead to significant societal change, regardless of age.
The press opening for Young John Lewis: Prodigy of Protest is scheduled for March 29, 2024, at 15:00, and members of the media are invited to attend this performance or any subsequent shows. This initiative is produced in collaboration with the John and Lillian Miles Lewis Foundation and the John R. Lewis Legacy Institute, reinforcing the commitment to preserve Lewis’s legacy and continue advocating for civil rights.
As the production unfolds, it promises to be both a tribute to a remarkable life and a call to action for current and future generations to engage in the ongoing fight for justice and equality.
