Milligan University Stages “Freaky Friday” Musical from Oct. 23-26

Milligan University’s musical theatre department is set to present the popular musical “Freaky Friday” from October 23 to 26, 2023. Based on the beloved novel by Mary Rodgers and adapted from the well-known Disney films, the production offers a whimsical exploration of family dynamics and personal growth.
Performances will take place each evening at 19:30, with an additional matinee on October 26 at 14:30. All seating is reserved, and tickets are priced at $12, available through milligan.tix.com.
The storyline revolves around an overworked mother and her teenage daughter who unexpectedly swap bodies just one day before the mother’s wedding. This magical twist leads to a day filled with chaos, laughter, and emotional revelations as they navigate each other’s lives.
Insightful Direction and Talented Cast
The musical features a new book by Bridget Carpenter, known for her work on “Parenthood,” and an original pop/rock score crafted by the acclaimed duo of Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey, both of whom have received Tony Awards and Pulitzer Prizes for their contributions to theatre.
Alena Carhart, assistant director and instructor of music and musical theatre at Milligan, expressed her enthusiasm for the production. “I think this is a great show for the whole family to enjoy. It takes the message of ‘walk a mile in their shoes’ and executes that in this show,” she said. “’Freaky Friday’ delivers a side-splitting comedy wrapped in a feel-good story with a killer soundtrack.”
The cast boasts a mix of talent, featuring senior Ariana Floyd as Ellie and seminary student Katie Freeman as Katherine. Other notable performers include Reese Drayer from Johnson City as Fletcher, Conner Roberts from Jonesborough as Mike, and Sallie Hatfield from Seymour as Gretchen. The ensemble also includes Juliana Harold as Hannah, Conner Morgan from Bluff City as Adam, Irie Manning from Etowah as Savannah, and Casey Roberts from Kingsport as Wells.
This production promises not only to entertain but also to resonate with audiences through its heartfelt themes of empathy and understanding. “Freaky Friday” is positioned to be a delightful experience for theatre-goers of all ages.
