The highly anticipated Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift roller coaster at Universal Studios Hollywood has officially begun testing its track. On October 16, 2023, the theme park conducted its first on-track launch test, marking a significant milestone in preparation for the ride’s scheduled debut in 2026.

During the initial test, a coaster train designed to resemble four street racing cars accelerated from zero to 72 mph on a 4,100-foot track. This thrilling ride will allow participants to drift and spin in a replica of Dominic Toretto’s iconic 1970 Dodge Charger, a nod to the popular film franchise known for its high-octane action and automotive culture.

Innovative Features and Design

The Hollywood Drift coaster aims to deliver an immersive experience, featuring 360-degree rotating coaster vehicles that evoke the essence of the street racing films. Riders will enter through a themed red brick auto repair garage before boarding one of the four uniquely designed ride vehicles.

In addition to its stunning visuals, the coaster will incorporate state-of-the-art technology, including sound reduction features intended to minimize noise for nearby residents. Universal Studios has described this ride system as containing first-of-its-kind innovations, which will enhance the overall experience for guests.

The coaster is set to be the first high-speed outdoor ride at Universal Studios Hollywood, joining the ranks of the park’s existing attractions, which include the 2004 Revenge of the Mummy indoor coaster and the 2016 Flight of the Hippogriff outdoor kiddie coaster.

Connection to the Film Franchise

The name “Hollywood Drift” pays homage to the 2006 film Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, where characters engage in drift racing, a technique that involves intentionally oversteering to the point of losing traction while still maintaining control of the vehicle. This cinematic heritage is expected to attract fans of the franchise, which has grossed approximately $7 billion globally at the box office.

As the excitement builds for the grand opening, Universal Studios Hollywood is positioning the Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift coaster as a centerpiece attraction that will attract thrill-seekers and movie enthusiasts alike. With its combination of speed, innovative design, and connections to a beloved film series, this ride is poised to be a significant addition to the park’s lineup.
