The Ascension Episcopal Blue Gators continued their undefeated season with a commanding 35-14 victory over Vermilion Catholic on October 13, 2023. Demonstrating a strong running game and a physical style of play, the Blue Gators amassed over 250 rushing yards and secured a defensive touchdown to maintain their dominance in District 5-1A.

Coach Jay Domengeaux emphasized the importance of physical play and ball protection leading up to the game. “We talked all week long about being physical and protecting the football,” he noted. “The guys really enjoy that brand of football, and I’m very proud of the way they played tonight.”

The scoring opened with a 1-yard touchdown run from quarterback Branon Mitchell, putting Ascension Episcopal ahead 7-0 in the first quarter. The defense quickly followed suit when Sport Gros intercepted a pass and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown, extending the lead to 14-0. “When you get a pick-six, or a turnover that you get points out of; that’s the equivalent of special teams points,” Domengeaux explained.

With a strong showing, the Blue Gators continued their offensive momentum, scoring a third time when Owen LeBlanc rushed for a 5-yard touchdown, bringing the score to 21-0. Vermilion Catholic managed to respond just before halftime, with William Simon scoring on a 1-yard run, reducing the deficit to 21-7.

After halftime, Vermilion Catholic had a chance to narrow the gap but was thwarted by a turnover on downs after advancing into Ascension Episcopal’s red zone. “That was huge because we talked at halftime about how important it was to get a stop right there,” Domengeaux remarked, commending his defense for their resilience.

The Blue Gators maintained control in the second half, with Mitchell scoring his second touchdown on a 41-yard run, extending the lead to 28-7. “Branon brings a little versatility,” Domengeaux noted. “He can run for a little bit of power when you need it, he can run for a big game-breaker, and he can also throw the ball down the field.”

Despite the setback, Vermilion Catholic fought back, with Simon scoring again, this time on a 13-yard run, to bring the score to 28-14. Ascension Episcopal sealed the victory with another touchdown from Mitchell, who connected with Preston Peebles for a 26-yard pass, making it 35-14.

“This is a real quality win for us,” Domengeaux stated. “I like when we take care of the football. There have been a couple of times when we’ve been a little risky with it, but when we take care of the football, we execute pretty well.”

As the season progresses, the Blue Gators have established themselves as a formidable opponent, showcasing a blend of athleticism and strategic play that few teams have managed to replicate this year.
