Community Mourns Loss of Betty Jean Carr, 96, Beloved Resident

Betty Jean Carr, a cherished member of the Elizabethton community, passed away on October 16, 2025, at the age of 96. A lifelong resident of Elizabethton, Tennessee, she is remembered for her warmth, dedication to her family, and active participation in community life.

Legacy of Love and Service

Born to the late James Lawrence and Gladys (Clark) Gouge, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Carr, and five siblings: Martha June Barbre, James L. Gouge, Carl Gouge, Sarah Beth Schaag, and Alan Gouge. She leaves behind a legacy that includes her brothers and sisters-in-law: Ronnie Gouge of Dallas, Georgia; Gary Gouge and Glen Gouge, both of Elizabethton, along with numerous nieces and nephews from the extensive Carr and Gouge families.

Betty graduated from Elizabethton High School and furthered her education at East Tennessee State College. Her professional journey spanned over 55 years at local establishments such as Watson’s and Peebles, where her friendly demeanor made her a favorite among customers.

A Life Full of Adventure

Known for her love of travel, Betty became a seasoned world traveler, collecting treasured plates from countries she visited. In her later years, she found joy in activities like puzzling and playing Mexican dominoes with family and friends. A devoted Christian, Betty was an active member of Hunter First Baptist Church, where she contributed significantly to community life.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 a.m. on October 23, 2025, at Memorial Funeral Chapel, led by Pastors Stephen Nauman and Jon Barnett. A graveside service will follow at 1 p.m. at Mountain Home National Cemetery in the Historic Section. Music will be provided by Patty Hodge and Glen Gouge, and pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. The family invites friends to visit from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service, with everyone meeting at the cemetery by 12:45 p.m..
