Syracuse Stage Delivers Lively Adaptation of ‘The 39 Steps’
Syracuse Stage, in collaboration with the Indiana Repertory Theatre, has launched its second production of the season with a vibrant adaptation of The 39 Steps. This stage version, adapted by Patrick Barlow from Alfred Hitchcock‘s 1935 film, is directed by Benjamin Hanna. The play combines elements of farce and intrigue, creating a lively experience that engages audiences from start to finish.
The plot centers on Richard Hannay, a charming 37-year-old man portrayed by Jürgen Hooper. He finds himself wrongfully accused of murder after a femme fatale named Annabella Schmidt, played by Tyler Meredith, is found dead in his apartment. As Hannay attempts to clear his name, he is pursued by Scotland Yard, leading to a series of comedic and chaotic events.
Dynamic Performances and Clever Staging
The success of this adaptation hinges on the exceptional performances of its cast, particularly Hooper, Meredith, Ema Zivkovic, and Michael Stewart Allen. Together, they navigate a multitude of characters, showcasing impressive vocal range and physicality. The rapid costume changes and transformations are executed flawlessly, highlighting the actors’ skills and dedication to their craft.
The staging is deceptively simple yet effectively enhances the narrative. Technical elements such as wig design, lighting effects, and wardrobe choices contribute to the overall atmosphere of the production. Notably, creative props like an airplane constructed from spare materials and a cleverly designed car with headlights elevate the comedic experience for the audience.
While the humor may resonate more with those familiar with farcical theatre, it captures a broad audience. The play offers a unique blend of comedy that, although niche, invites laughter and engagement from viewers. Those who appreciate works like Noises Off or One Man, Two Guvnors will likely find joy in this adaptation.
