Leavitt and Ballas Navigate ‘DWTS’ Giveaway Controversy
Whitney Leavitt and Mark Ballas have encountered a setback regarding their plans for a fan giveaway associated with the popular television show, Dancing With the Stars. The couple announced they would pause their giveaway initiative after receiving instructions that prohibited them from proceeding. Leavitt expressed her disappointment in an exclusive interview with Us Weekly, stating, “It was a mishap… It is what it is, but we’re going to find out something to do … to say how much we appreciate them.”
The issue arose shortly before the Halloween Night episode aired on October 28, 2023. The duo had initially intended to offer two fans the opportunity to attend a live taping of the show. However, they revealed on TikTok that the plans were halted due to a directive from ABC and BBC, which they said was “completely out of our hands.”
Public Reaction and Performance Insights
Following the announcement, the couple faced mixed reactions online. Some social media users criticized them, alleging that their giveaway attempts amounted to “bribing” viewers for votes. Others countered that the backlash would not be as severe if another contestant pair had proposed a similar giveaway. Despite the controversy, Leavitt and Ballas showcased a strong performance that night, executing a jazz routine to Green Day‘s “Brain Stew,” earning a score of 37 out of 40 from the judges.
Leavitt dismissed any connection between the backlash and their performance, asserting, “It wasn’t playing in my mind at all.” Ballas, displaying a professional attitude, looked forward to reviewing their performance footage. He emphasized the learning aspect of their journey, stating, “Of course there’s going to be things that we have to work on.”
The couple’s dedication to improvement was evident as they managed to secure additional points by winning the dance marathon, boosting their overall score. With the next episode, themed Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Night, approaching on November 4, Leavitt expressed her commitment to refining her timing. “I want to really work on it,” she noted, recognizing opportunities for growth.
Looking Ahead
As the season progresses, Leavitt and Ballas continue to explore creative avenues to engage with their fans. While the cancellation of the giveaway created a stir, both dancers remain focused on their performances and the ultimate goal of the competition. The season 34 finale of Dancing With the Stars is scheduled for November 25, 2023, and both competitors are eager to make lasting impressions as they navigate this tumultuous journey.
Dancing With the Stars airs on ABC and Disney+ every Tuesday at 20:00 ET, with episodes available for streaming the following day on Hulu.
