Duke Battles Texas in Dick Vitale Invitational on Nov. 4
The highly anticipated matchup between the No. 6 Duke Blue Devils and the Texas Longhorns will take place on November 4, 2025, as part of the inaugural Dick Vitale Invitational at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. This game marks a significant moment for the legendary basketball commentator, Dick Vitale, who has recently returned to broadcasting after battling multiple health challenges.
At 86 years old, Vitale has overcome considerable adversity, including four cancer battles over the past few years. His return to the airwaves is not just a personal victory but also a celebration of his enduring contribution to college basketball. “I’m 86 years old, and to be going on TV after four cancer battles, I’m pinching myself,” Vitale expressed in an interview with The Associated Press. His dedication to the sport and his vibrant personality have made him a beloved figure in basketball.
The Dick Vitale Invitational was officially announced by ESPN Events in June 2025, honoring Vitale’s nearly five-decade association with the network. He has been a fixture in college basketball since the network’s first broadcast in 1979, captivating audiences with his signature exuberance and memorable catchphrases. Despite undergoing significant health adjustments, Vitale has maintained his passion for the game, referring to being courtside as “like medicine, man.”
The upcoming game has garnered attention not just for its competitive nature but also for the tribute to Vitale’s legacy. Longhorns coach Sean Miller reflected on the impact Vitale has had on the sport, stating, “His passion for college basketball, his knowledge, he made the game better and certainly impacted coaches, players, and teams.” Miller’s admiration underscores the reverence many have for Vitale within the basketball community.
Vitale’s health challenges began in 2021 with melanoma, followed by treatments for lymphoma. In 2024, he underwent surgery to remove cancerous lymph nodes from his neck. Throughout his journey, he has remained transparent about his experiences, sharing updates on social media and emphasizing the importance of support from loved ones and colleagues. He credited ESPN Chairman James Pitaro and the network as his “second family,” providing crucial emotional support during his recovery.
As he approaches the game against Texas, Vitale has made adjustments to his workload to protect his vocal health. He intends to limit his participation in podcasts and interviews, aiming to conserve energy for game days. “I used to say yes to everybody,” he noted about his previous commitments. This strategic shift allows him to focus on what he loves most—calling games and engaging with fans.
From the airwaves, longtime ESPN basketball analyst Jay Bilas praised Vitale for his resilience. “He’s been kind enough to be transparent and bring us all along on this difficult and inspiring journey,” Bilas stated. His support highlights the camaraderie that exists within the sport, especially during challenging times.
Despite the adjustments to his routine, Vitale’s passion for raising funds for pediatric cancer research remains unwavering. The V Foundation, which he co-founded, has raised over $105 million in its 20-year history. He continues to advocate for this cause, promoting events like the ongoing raffle for a 2026 BMW Z4 convertible to support cancer research efforts.
As the Dick Vitale Invitational approaches, the excitement surrounding the game grows. Vitale’s enduring spirit and dedication to the sport serve as an inspiration to many. “It really moved me to tears,” he said of the event’s launch. With the Duke-Texas matchup on the horizon, fans can expect a thrilling display of talent on the court while honoring one of basketball’s most beloved figures.
