Caribbean Artists Unite to Promote Blood Donations Through Music
Two prominent figures in the Caribbean cultural scene, Prince Forde and Keenan “Special” Bristol, are harnessing their artistic platforms to address a critical health issue affecting communities of African and Caribbean descent. They are doing this through their nonprofit initiative, “Music Brings Life,” which aims to raise awareness about the urgent need for blood donations, particularly across Black, Caribbean, and Latino populations.
Documentary Screening Tour Launches
On November 4, 2023, Marie Driven, managing partner of the Brooklyn-based entertainment company PlaybookMG, spoke about the initiative in an interview with Caribbean Life. She highlighted that “Music Brings Life” has partnered with the Sickle Cell Consortium and the Boys & Girls Club to launch a three-state film screening tour this fall. The tour will feature the documentary “Students Are Heroes: A Sickle Cell Warrior’s Story,” which showcases the resilience of students and families affected by sickle cell disease.
Driven noted that the documentary emphasizes community action, particularly within the Caribbean Diaspora, as a means to foster life-saving change. The tour commenced successfully at the Worley Brown Boys & Girls Club in Norcross, Georgia, and will subsequently move to New York City and New Jersey, with plans for a nationwide expansion set for 2026.
Advocacy Through Culture
Both Forde and Bristol bring significant cultural credentials to their advocacy work. Forde, a Barbadian native based in Brooklyn, is not only a cultural producer but also a co-founder of Caribbean Elite Magazine and the Caribbean Music Awards. He serves as the Chief Operating Officer of “Music Brings Life.” Bristol, who hails from Guyana, founded the nonprofit and has been instrumental in collecting over 5,000 units of blood since 2009 through various music-driven campaigns and outreach efforts.
Driven remarked that the collaboration between Forde and Bristol represents a pivotal cultural moment, merging Caribbean creativity with health advocacy to inspire awareness and action. Their joint mission focuses on educating families about the importance of blood donations and raising awareness about sickle cell disease, which disproportionately impacts people of African and Caribbean descent.
This initiative not only underscores the significant role of cultural figures in public health but also highlights the power of community engagement in tackling urgent health issues. As the tour progresses, the hope is to inspire greater participation in blood donation efforts and improve health outcomes for those affected by sickle cell disease.
