Adult Swim’s Smiling Friends to Conclude with Season 3 Finale
In a surprising announcement, creators Michael Cusack and Zach Hadel have confirmed that their acclaimed animated series, Smiling Friends, will conclude after its third season. The final two episodes are set to air on April 12, 2026, marking a bittersweet end to a show that has garnered a dedicated fan base on Adult Swim.
Creators Discuss Decision to End Series
During a recent social media update, Cusack and Hadel explained that the decision was not made lightly. Both creators expressed a sense of burnout after years of dedication to the series, stating that they felt it was the right time to say goodbye to characters Charlie and Pim. “To be perfectly honest, after we finished Season 3, Zach and I just both had the same feeling where we felt pretty burnt out after putting years and years into this,” Cusack shared. “We just came to this feeling where we were like, ‘I think that could just be it,’ after Season 3.”
The show’s creators also acknowledged that although Adult Swim had renewed the series for two additional seasons, they preferred to end it on a high note rather than risk producing content that lacked passion. Hadel emphasized, “We wouldn’t want to be doing more seasons half-hearted or burnt out or not feeling it. That’s not fair to us, and it’s not fair to the audience to give you guys f***ing slop.”
Future Possibilities and Fan Reactions
While the series is concluding, there remains a glimmer of hope for fans. Cusack mentioned that Adult Swim is open to the possibility of future episodes should they feel inspired to return. “When we told them exactly this, they said, ‘If you’re not feeling like making a cartoon, we’re not going to stop you. Go have a break. Either come back or don’t,’” he noted. This flexibility suggests that the creators might revisit the animated world of Smiling Friends if they choose.
As for the upcoming final episodes, fans should temper their expectations regarding closure for Charlie and Pim’s storyline. Hadel referred to these episodes as “little stragglers,” and Cusack admitted that it is difficult to end the series without a definitive conclusion. “We know this is very disappointing. It’s been very hard to even record this recording for it because it’s just a very difficult thing to say for us,” he stated. “We hope you understand, and we hope you’ve enjoyed what we’ve done.”
The creators expressed gratitude towards their fan base, describing the experience of creating Smiling Friends as “the ride of a lifetime.” As the series prepares to say farewell, the anticipation surrounding the final episodes is palpable among viewers, eager to see how the journey concludes.
For fans and critics alike, the end of Smiling Friends signifies not just the closure of a beloved series but also a moment to reflect on the unique contribution it has made to animated television. As the air date approaches, conversations about the show’s impact and legacy are expected to intensify.
