Authorities Pursue Leads in Disappearance of Nancy Guthrie
The search for Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today Show co-host Savannah Guthrie, continues to intensify as authorities warn it may take years to resolve the case. Two weeks after Nancy was reported missing from her home in Tucson, Arizona, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos stated that while investigators are diligently pursuing leads, the timeline for finding her remains uncertain.
On February 13, Nanos addressed the public, saying, “Maybe it’s an hour from now. Maybe it’s weeks or months or years from now. But we won’t quit. We’re going to find Nancy.” The sheriff emphasized the challenges faced by the investigative team, noting the emotional toll of the ongoing search. “It’s exhausting, these ups and downs. But we will keep moving forward,” he added.
New Evidence and Investigation Details
During the investigation, authorities discovered “several gloves” near Nancy’s property, where surveillance footage captured a masked individual on February 1. According to a press release from the sheriff’s department, the closest gloves were found approximately two miles from her home. The release clarified that reports claiming a glove was found on the property were inaccurate, and all evidence has been submitted for laboratory analysis.
Additionally, unidentified DNA evidence was collected from Nancy’s home. The release stated, “DNA other than Nancy Guthrie’s and those in close contact to her has been collected from the property,” but did not disclose the location of this evidence. Investigators are working to identify its origin.
Following Nancy’s disappearance, the FBI released doorbell camera footage that provided a description of a potential suspect. On February 12, they confirmed new identifying details after a forensic analysis of the footage. The suspect is described as a male, approximately 5’9” to 5’10” tall, with an average build, wearing a black backpack.
Despite concerns for Nancy’s health, Sheriff Nanos indicated that there is no evidence suggesting she is deceased. “I don’t have any reason to believe she’s not alive,” he told Reuters. He reiterated that both the family and law enforcement believe she is still alive and that their collective efforts reflect this conviction.
Community Support and Family Pleas
Nancy was last seen by her family around 9:30 p.m. on January 31, 2024. She was reported missing the following day after a friend alerted her family that she did not attend a church service. After an hour of searching her property, her children contacted the authorities to report her missing.
At a press conference on February 2, Sheriff Nanos stated that investigators believe a crime occurred at Nancy’s home, declaring it a “crime scene.” He highlighted Nancy’s limited mobility, noting that she “couldn’t walk 50 yards by herself,” which raises concerns about foul play. “We know she didn’t just walk out of there,” he confirmed.
As the investigation continues, authorities emphasize Nancy’s need for daily medication, which she likely lacks. “This is an 84-year-old lady who suffers from some physical ailments,” Nanos said. He made an urgent plea for anyone with information to come forward, stating, “We don’t need another bad, tragic ending. We need some help.”
On February 2, Savannah Guthrie publicly expressed gratitude for the support her family has received during this difficult time. “Our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy,” she said in a statement to NBC.
Savannah’s colleagues at Today also voiced their support, urging viewers to assist in the search. Co-anchor Jenna Bush Hager stated, “We love Nancy. Our prayers obviously go out to Savannah and the entire family.” Meanwhile, fellow anchor Sheinelle Jones emphasized the strength of community during such crises, encouraging anyone with information to reach out to law enforcement.
Authorities have since confirmed that they are in contact with Savannah regarding her safety. Sheriff Nanos assured the public that there is currently “no indication that the public is in danger.” He noted that Savannah has a security team in place.
As the investigation unfolds, Savannah and her siblings have made direct appeals to potential captors, pleading for their mother’s safe return. “Our mom is our heart and our home,” she stated, emphasizing Nancy’s fragile health and urgent need for medication.
Investigators continue to seek information related to Nancy’s disappearance, with the FBI increasing the reward to $100,000 for information leading to her location. As the community rallies around the Guthrie family, the hope remains that Nancy will be found safe and sound.
