Laughter Takes Center Stage with ‘Inspecting Carol’ at UH Hilo

The University of Hawaii at Hilo Performing Arts Center is set to present the comedic play “Inspecting Carol” this weekend, adding a dose of humor to its 2025-26 season. The production, directed by Justina Mattos, showcases a small theatre company’s struggles, echoing the financial challenges faced by many arts organizations today.

Originally written in 1991 by Daniel J. Sullivan, “Inspecting Carol” was first produced by the Seattle Repertory Theatre. Lee Dombroski, the manager of the UH Performing Arts Center, noted that the play’s themes of budgetary shortfalls are particularly relevant, especially following recent cuts to the National Endowment of the Arts. “It’s about a small theater company that is having a rough time. It’s very apropos,” Dombroski commented, highlighting the current climate affecting performing arts.

The plot centers around a theatre company struggling to mount its annual production of “A Christmas Carol.” In a humorous twist, the company mistakenly believes a random visitor is an inspector from the NEA. Dombroski described the situation as one where “everything that can go wrong does, and it all happens in front of the real NEA inspector.” She added with a laugh, “It’s a real hoot,” indicating that audiences can expect plenty of comedic moments.

“Inspecting Carol” will run on December 8 and 9 at 19:00, with a closing matinee on December 10 at 14:00. Ticket prices are set at $20 for general admission, $15 for faculty, staff, alumni, and kupuna, and $10 for children aged 17 and under, as well as for UH Hilo or Hawaii Community College students who present a valid ID.
