Fans of the beloved animated series X-Men ’97 can now look forward to a new comic series that hints at the upcoming second season. Marvel Comics announced a prelude comic for X-Men ’97 on Friday, providing a glimpse into the show’s continuity and potential release timeframe. The first issue of this five-part series is set to arrive on June 3, 2026, giving fans their first clue about the anticipated premiere of the new season.

The prequel comic, titled X-Men ’97: Season Two, will be written by Steve Foxe and illustrated by Salva Espin. It is designed to pick up directly from the cliffhanger ending of season one, exploring the challenges faced by the X-Men in a world that continues to hunt and persecute mutantkind. Marvel’s official release states, “Follow the X-Men left behind in a world that hunts and hates mutantkind! Can they survive? And just where — or when — are the X-Men now?!”

This new comic series promises to introduce “major new characters — and teams — joining the cast,” potentially offering a sneak peek at fresh mutants who may feature in the forthcoming season. Foxe emphasized the importance of continuity in the narrative, stating, “Our prequel for Season Two doesn’t take any cheats or shortcuts around that wild status quo.”

Fans of the franchise may recall that the first season also had a tie-in comic that was released shortly after the show premiered on Disney Plus. In a similar fashion, the timing of this prequel comic suggests that season two may follow suit, potentially debuting in the summer of 2026. While specific details regarding the premiere date of the animated series remain under wraps, the release of the comic could indicate that fans will not have to wait long for more X-Men adventures.

The comic’s first issue will showcase two covers, designed by Todd Nauck and Jhony Caballero. The main cover promises to capture the essence of the series, while the variant cover draws inspiration from both season one and the classic video game Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes.

As anticipation builds among fans, the arrival of this prequel comic not only serves as a bridge to the next season but also fuels excitement for what lies ahead in the world of X-Men ’97. With new characters and unresolved storylines at stake, the comic is set to provide a thrilling lead-in to the animated series’ next chapter. Stay tuned for further announcements regarding the release of X-Men ’97 season two and additional updates on the comic series.
