Michigan Coach Sherrone Moore Builds Ties with Nick Saban
Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore has established a notable connection with Nick Saban, a figure many consider the greatest coach in college football history. Their relationship has blossomed through regular conversations, providing Moore with valuable insights as he navigates his role at the University of Michigan.
Moore, who previously played at Oklahoma and held coaching positions at Louisville and Central Michigan, has built a network of influential contacts in college football. Among them are familiar names like Jim Harbaugh, who has been pivotal in Moore’s career, having hired him as a tight ends coach and later promoting him to offensive line coach and offensive coordinator. Their collaboration reached a peak when Harbaugh temporarily stepped back, placing Moore in the position of interim head coach.
The rapport with Saban has been particularly meaningful for Moore. “I try to call him probably every two months or so,” Moore revealed during a press conference in Ann Arbor on November 10, 2023. “When you call Coach Saban, sometimes you’re unsure if he really wants to talk, but he does. Once he starts talking, it’s outstanding. Why not take advice from someone you consider probably the GOAT of college football?”
Their connection has gained additional significance following a memorable moment in college football. On January 1, 2024, the Wolverines faced off against Saban’s Alabama in the Rose Bowl, where Michigan prevailed 27-20 in overtime, marking Saban’s final game as head coach. This victory added another layer to Moore’s admiration for Saban, who has claimed seven national titles—one with LSU in 2003 and six with Alabama between 2009 and 2020.
This relationship was facilitated by Michigan’s associate head coach Biff Poggi, a long-time friend of Saban. Moore reached out for Saban’s contact in February 2024, shortly after he was appointed as the full-time coach following Harbaugh’s departure to coach the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers.
During their conversations, Saban has shared candid insights about the challenges the Wolverines posed during their game plans. “I remember him saying, ‘I really didn’t like your game plan against us; you guys shifted and motioned to every play, and it was annoying,’” Moore recalled. “And I was like, ‘Thanks, Coach.’”
As the press conference concluded, a reporter lightheartedly inquired whether Saban might be seeking revenge for the Wolverines’ decisive victory. Moore smiled and responded, “No, I don’t think so. Unless we’re playing Alabama.”
This growing relationship between Moore and Saban exemplifies the interconnected nature of college football coaching, where shared experiences and mutual respect drive professional development. As Moore continues to lead the Wolverines, these conversations with Saban may prove invaluable in shaping his coaching strategy and enhancing Michigan’s competitiveness on the field.
