Paramount+ Unveils ‘Knuckles’: A Fun Weekend Binge for 90s Fans
The new six-part series *Knuckles*, available on Paramount+, has emerged as a delightful binge-watch, particularly for fans of the 1990s. The show, which features the beloved SEGA character, is set between *Sonic the Hedgehog 2* and *Sonic the Hedgehog 3*, and delivers an engaging mix of action and comedy.
Idris Elba voices the titular character, a crimson echidna navigating his new life on Earth. In his quest for belonging, he partners with Adam Pally‘s Wade Whipple, a deputy introduced in the *Sonic the Hedgehog* films. Together, they face off against G.U.N. agents, a continuation of the storyline from the previous movies, while also addressing larger threats posed by the notorious Dr. Robotnik.
Star Power and Humor
The series boasts a talented cast, including notable names like Cary Elwes, Christopher Lloyd, Stockard Channing, and Kid Cudi, ensuring that *Knuckles* is not lacking in star power. The format mirrors that of the original films, focusing on the dynamic between a quirky cop and a super-powered echidna.
Viewers should approach *Knuckles* without expectations of a direct continuation of the film series. While it does not quite match the cinematic quality of the three films, it thrives on its own merits, particularly in its comedic moments. The series truly shines during episodes three and four, notably with the episode titled “The Flames of Disaster.” Directed by Jorma Taccone of The Lonely Island, this episode features zany musical numbers and a villain that rivals Jim Carrey’s iconic portrayal of Robotnik.
The comedic style of *Knuckles* is unapologetically surreal, offering a level of humor that diverges from the blockbuster experience. This approach allows the show to explore themes of family and friendship with a unique flair.
Quick and Entertaining
With only six episodes, each running approximately 30 minutes, *Knuckles* is a light commitment for viewers looking for engaging content. The series features an entertaining origin story for the character, highlighted by an 80s-style rock opera that stands out as a memorable moment.
Overall, *Knuckles* is a refreshing addition to the Sonic franchise, appealing to both long-time fans and newcomers alike. The show encapsulates the essence of fun and adventure, making it an ideal choice for a weekend binge.
