Stranger Things Season 5 premiered in late 2025, marking a significant moment as it concluded Netflix’s flagship series. This highly anticipated release generated considerable discussion among fans, particularly regarding the final episode and the season overall. Despite some divisive opinions, the viewership numbers indicate that the show remains a major draw, quickly breaking records as new episodes were released during the holiday season.

As of now, Stranger Things Season 5 ranks fourth on Netflix’s list of its ten most popular TV shows of all time. The season has garnered 120.1 million views and has been watched for a total of 1.249 billion hours. This impressive performance has allowed it to surpass Wednesday Season 2, which achieved 119.3 million views.

Record-Breaking Competition

Earlier this month, Netflix released its “What We Watched” report for the second half of 2025, revealing that Stranger Things Season 5 was the streamer’s second most-watched show during that period. The timing of the releases played a crucial role; while Wednesday Season 2 debuted in the summer, Stranger Things Season 5 was released around Thanksgiving, with the complete season available only after the finale dropped on New Year’s Eve. This staggered release meant that Stranger Things did not surpass Wednesday Season 2 until weeks into 2026.

Despite its successes, analysts predict that Stranger Things Season 5 will likely not surpass the record set by Wednesday Season 1. The inaugural season of Wednesday remains Netflix’s top show, having accumulated 252.1 million views and 1.718 billion hours watched. Currently, there is a deficit of 132 million views between Stranger Things Season 5 and Wednesday Season 1. Given that Netflix’s viewing data is based on the first 91 days of release, Stranger Things Season 5 has only 31 days left to close this gap and would need to average around 4.25 million views per day to do so.

Future of the Franchise

While the initial excitement surrounding Stranger Things Season 5 may be waning, the show’s overall popularity remains significant. The series finale has been available for nearly a month, and viewership is expected to gradually decline, a trend common with major releases as time passes. Although the show will not likely catch up to Wednesday Season 1, Netflix is looking to continue the Stranger Things franchise through upcoming spinoffs, including an animated series titled Stranger Things: Tales from ’85.

Since its debut in 2016, Stranger Things has consistently ranked among Netflix’s most popular original programs. With its enduring appeal, it will be intriguing to see how future projects perform in comparison to the main series.
