Yellowstone Stars Josh Lucas and Brandon Sklenar Unite for New Film
The worlds of Yellowstone and Western cinema converge as actors Josh Lucas and Brandon Sklenar team up for the upcoming film, The Rescue. This project marks a significant reunion for the two stars, both of whom have deep roots in the Yellowstone franchise. Lucas is known for his portrayal of a younger John Dutton III in the main series, while Sklenar plays Spencer Dutton in the prequel 1923.
The film, which was first announced in December 2025, has garnered attention for its impressive cast, which includes Tim Blake Nelson, Josh Duhamel, and Hassie Harrison, among others. Harrison previously appeared in Yellowstone as the ranch hand Laramie. Directed by Potsy Ponciroli and written by John Fusco, The Rescue is described as a modern-day Western that challenges a rodeo cowboy’s skills beyond the arena, although specific plot details remain undisclosed.
The film has already been a priority for Skydance during its development phase, especially following the merger with Paramount. It is one of the first projects to receive the green light under the new leadership structure at Skydance. Ponciroli will also serve as a producer alongside Shannon Houchins and Cliff Roberts, with Down Home executive producing.
The Yellowstone franchise, created by Taylor Sheridan, has captured audiences with its portrayal of the Dutton family’s multi-generational saga. The franchise includes the flagship series, which began airing on June 20, 2018, along with its prequels 1883 and 1923. As the franchise continues to expand, the collaboration between Lucas and Sklenar in The Rescue adds another layer of excitement for fans.
As the film approaches its production phase, anticipation builds not just for the performances of its talented cast, but also for its innovative storyline that promises to resonate with both Western enthusiasts and Yellowstone devotees alike. The film’s release date and additional details are yet to be announced, but the involvement of familiar faces from the franchise has undoubtedly piqued interest.
