Beloved Community Figure Carolyn Mailliard Hacker Passes Away at 87

Carolyn Mailliard Hacker, a cherished resident of San Rafael, California, passed away on November 21, 2025, at the age of 87 due to complications related to Alzheimer’s disease. Born in 1938 in San Francisco, Carolyn was the eldest daughter of J.W. Mailliard and Margaret Field, and the granddaughter of influential figures in the Bay Area, Ward and Kate Mailliard.

Throughout her life, Carolyn maintained strong connections to various communities in the Bay Area, including San Geronimo, Cotati, and Yorkville. Her early childhood was marked by travel, as her family moved frequently while her father served in the United States Army. After the conclusion of World War II, the family returned to San Francisco, where Carolyn pursued her education at KD Burke School, Katherine Branson Girls School, and later at Connecticut College for Women.

Life in San Rafael

In 1963, Carolyn established her home in San Rafael, where she lived for over six decades. Her passion for gardening became a defining aspect of her life. Carolyn took great pride in her vibrant plants, earning numerous accolades at the Marin County Fair. Alongside her gardening, she enjoyed knitting and devoted significant time to genealogy, meticulously researching her family’s lineage to preserve their history for future generations.

Carolyn was an active volunteer and community member, contributing her time and efforts to the Miller Creek Elementary School District and the San Rafael City Schools District from 1972 to 1980. Her dedication to education and community service underscored her belief in the importance of giving back to the places she loved.

A Lasting Legacy

Carolyn leaves behind a legacy characterized by her unwavering commitment to her family and community. She is survived by her husband, Paul Hacker; her children, Barbara and Lyn; and her grandchildren, Andrew, Chris, Emily, Amanda, and Kevin. She also cherished her great-granddaughter, Jocelyn, along with her sisters, Kathy and Margot, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A Celebration of Life is planned to honor Carolyn on her birthday and Mother’s Day in May 2026. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorial contributions to the San Rafael Public Library Foundation or the Marin Humane Society, reflecting Carolyn’s love for education and community support.

Her passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of many, both within her family and among the friends and neighbors she touched throughout her life. Carolyn Mailliard Hacker will be remembered not only for her many accomplishments but also for the love she shared with those around her.
