A recent review of brain-imaging studies highlights the potential cognitive benefits of chewing gum, revealing its effects on attention, stress, and alertness. This new research, published in 2025 by scientists at the University of Szczecin in Poland, meticulously analyzed over three decades of studies that utilized advanced imaging techniques, including MRI and EEG. The findings indicate that this simple habit may influence brain activity in meaningful ways, enhancing focus and promoting a sense of calm.

Chewing gum has a storied history that dates back at least 8,000 years. Ancient cultures, from the Greeks to Native American tribes, engaged in the practice, often for its soothing properties. The modern commercial evolution of chewing gum began in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, largely thanks to William Wrigley Jr., who popularized brands like Juicy Fruit and Spearmint. His marketing strategies positioned gum as a remedy for stress and an aid for concentration, establishing a legacy that continues to inform today’s perceptions of the product.

Recent research sheds light on the neurological mechanisms behind these long-held beliefs. The comprehensive review by the University of Szczecin uncovered that chewing gum activates brain areas linked to movement, attention, and emotional regulation. Notably, the studies showed that gum chewing leads to brief alterations in brain-wave patterns, which are associated with increased alertness and what researchers describe as “relaxed concentration.” Crystal Haskell-Ramsay, a professor of biological psychology at Northumbria University, pointed out that chewing gum can help maintain concentration during tedious tasks.

Laboratory experiments further support these findings. Participants who chewed gum while performing mildly stressful activities, such as public speaking or mental arithmetic, reported lower anxiety levels compared to those who did not chew gum. Yet, the stress-reducing benefits were not consistent across all scenarios. In situations involving high stress, such as before surgical procedures or when faced with frustrating problems, the advantages of chewing gum were less apparent.

Despite the promising insights, researchers caution against overestimating the benefits of chewing gum. The review revealed that while participants experienced temporary enhancements in focus and stress relief, these effects were often short-lived. Furthermore, no significant improvements in memory recall were observed among those who chewed gum compared to non-chewers. Researchers hypothesize that the act of chewing may simply satisfy a human need to fidget, contributing to the perceived cognitive benefits.

The study’s authors also recognize the need for further investigation. They emphasize the importance of exploring long-term effects, differentiating the impacts of flavor and stress variables, and examining potential therapeutic applications of chewing gum.

In addition to its cognitive implications, there are potential downsides to gum chewing that deserve attention. Dental professionals have raised concerns about the acids and sweeteners present in many gum varieties, which can harm teeth over time. Even sugar-free options are not without risks, underscoring the complexity of understanding gum’s effects on health.

As researchers continue to explore the cognitive and physical impacts of chewing gum, it is clear that this simple habit warrants a nuanced approach. While its potential benefits for focus and stress relief are intriguing, individuals should remain mindful of both its advantages and limitations.
