Cliff Richard Advocates for Prostate Cancer Screening After Treatment

Cliff Richard, the acclaimed British singer, has disclosed that he has undergone treatment for prostate cancer over the past year. The 85-year-old artist shared that he is currently cancer-free but emphasized the importance of screening for men during an interview on Good Morning Britain. Richard, known for hits such as “The Young Ones” and “We Don’t Talk Anymore,” is now a vocal advocate for a national screening program to detect prostate cancer early.

In the interview, Richard stated, “I don’t know whether it’s going to come back. We can’t tell those sort of things, but we need to – absolutely.” He believes that men should prioritize testing, urging, “Get there, get tested, get checked.” Richard’s cancer was detected during a health check related to insurance, just prior to his concert tour of Australia and New Zealand.

He expressed his relief that the cancer was diagnosed at an early stage, explaining, “The good fortune was that it was not very old; and the other thing is that it has not metastasised. Nothing had moved into bones or anything like that.” Richard’s comments come as he calls for greater awareness and accessibility to screening for prostate cancer, which he described as “absolutely ridiculous” in the absence of a national programme.

Advocating for Change

Richard criticized the government for not providing adequate screening options, stating, “We have governments to look after our country and those who live in that country, so I can’t see how you can say: ‘Oh, we can do this, we can do that, but we don’t do this for these people.’” He argued that all individuals deserve the opportunity to undergo testing and receive early treatment.

The singer has been active in charity work throughout his career and expressed his willingness to collaborate with others, including King Charles, to raise awareness about cancer screening. Richard remarked, “If the king is happy to front it for us, I’m sure loads of people – I certainly would join him.”

Recently, King Charles announced that his own cancer treatment would be reduced in the upcoming year, further highlighting the ongoing conversation around cancer awareness and treatment in the UK.

Potential for National Screening

In November 2023, the UK National Screening Committee revealed a draft recommendation for a targeted prostate cancer screening program. If approved, the initiative would invite men aged 45 to 61 who carry mutations in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes to participate in screening every two years. Richard supports this recommendation and believes it could significantly improve early detection rates, ultimately saving lives.
