Community Mourns the Loss of Ralph Sterling Herron, 72

Ralph Sterling Herron, a respected member of the Fairmont community, passed away on December 25, 2025, at the age of 72, after bravely battling cancer for eight years. His family and friends remember him as a dedicated father, a passionate Scouter, and a devoted member of his church.

Born on October 6, 1953, in Painesville, Ohio, Ralph married Kathy Thomas in 1979. The couple welcomed three sons: Steve, Todd, and Victor. Ralph built a successful career at North American Phillips, also known as Westinghouse, where he was known for his strong work ethic and commitment to excellence.

Ralph’s love for the Boy Scouts was evident throughout his life. He held numerous leadership roles within the Scouting program, including positions with the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, and at the Mountaineer Area Council. His influence extended to Camp Mountaineer, where he participated actively, and to Philmont, leading contingents for young Scouts. From 2006 to 2023, he served as the Conference Scouting Coordinator for the Circuit Rider Camporees, merging his passion for Scouting with his faith.

His dedication to Scouting earned Ralph multiple accolades during his 57 years of service, including the District Award of Merit, the Whitney M. Young Award, the Torch Award, and the Silver Beaver. He was also awarded the Vigil Honor with the Menawngihella Order of the Arrow Lodge #550. Ralph’s leadership and loyalty were recognized widely, whether at his church, Highlawns United Methodist Church, or within the Salvation Army.

Ralph graduated from Fairmont State College in 1975, earning a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology. His educational background contributed to his professional success and his ability to inspire others.

Ralph leaves behind his wife and primary caregiver, Kathy Herron; his brother, Roger (Denise) Herron; sons Steve (Dawn) Herron, with grandchildren Archer and Coen, and Victor (Bethany) Herron; father-in-law, the Rev. Donald Thomas; and many cousins, in-laws, nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Todd Herron, his parents Troy and Flo Herron, mother-in-law Montana Thomas, and his grandparents.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Mountaineer Area Council, located at 192 McColloch Drive, Wheeling, WV 26003; Highlawns United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 485, Rivesville, WV 26588; or a charity of one’s choice.

The family has entrusted arrangements to the Ford Funeral Home, Ford Chapel, at 201 Columbia Street, Fairmont. Friends and family will be received on Monday, December 29, from 1 to 8 p.m., and again on Tuesday, December 30, from 12 Noon until the funeral service begins at 2 p.m., officiated by the Reverend David Stilgenbauer. A committal service will follow at Pisgah Cemetery in Fairmont.
