Flu Cases Surge in Bexar County Emergency Rooms as CDC Warns

Emergency room visits for influenza have surged dramatically in Bexar County, Texas, marking a significant increase in flu-related cases. By the end of December 2023, there were five times more visits to San Antonio emergency rooms for flu symptoms compared to the beginning of the month. Approximately 10% of all patients seeking emergency care in the county were treated for flu, a figure higher than seen in years, according to Miguel Cervantes, assistant director of the Communicable Disease Division of the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District.

Cervantes noted that the previous peak for flu-related emergency visits in the past five years was around 8%. The recent surge highlights a concerning trend, especially as healthcare systems manage multiple respiratory illnesses simultaneously.

Flu Activity Remains High Despite Recent Decline

Although emergency visits peaked dramatically in December, data from the Texas Department of State Health Services indicated a significant drop in flu cases during the week ending on January 3, 2024. Approximately 10,000 fewer individuals visited emergency rooms for flu symptoms compared to the previous week. Despite this decline, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has categorized influenza-like illness activity in Texas as “very high.”

The flu season has also resulted in tragic outcomes, with eight children reported to have died from complications related to the flu during the week ending January 3, bringing the total to 17 fatalities since the beginning of the season. The rise in flu cases is compounded by other respiratory illnesses, such as COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), further complicating the public health landscape.

Importance of Timely Treatment and Precautions

Cervantes emphasized the necessity of accurate diagnosis and timely treatment amid the ongoing flu outbreak. He urged anyone exhibiting flu symptoms to seek testing, as treatments differ based on the specific virus. “A lot of people think that, ‘Oh! I’m sick! I’m gonna get an antibiotic!'” Cervantes explained. “Well, guess what? That’s not gonna be effective against the flu because the flu is a virus.”

Antiviral medications are available for both flu and COVID-19, but their effectiveness hinges on early administration. This year, the dominant strain, H3N2, has been noted for its severity, making prompt treatment critical. “So timing does matter,” Cervantes stressed. To help mitigate the flu’s spread, Cervantes recommended standard health precautions, such as frequent handwashing and staying home when unwell. “Don’t go to work. Don’t go to school. Don’t send your kids to school,” he advised, highlighting that transmission occurs when individuals participate in communal activities.
