Mother’s Vigilance Saves Her Life After Skin Cancer Diagnosis

Courtney Siley, a 36-year-old mother from Fort Bragg, North Carolina, turned her experience with a seemingly innocuous mark on her cheek into a life-saving medical intervention. After years of considering the blemish a “weird birthmark,” Siley’s persistence led to a diagnosis of Stage II melanoma in July 2023, highlighting the importance of vigilance regarding skin health.

For many years, Siley overlooked the small mark on her cheek, which she initially dismissed as benign. Family members noticed changes in its size and shape, prompting them to encourage her to seek medical advice. Eventually, she consulted a doctor who performed a skin test for melanoma. Initially, the test results were negative, providing Siley with a sense of relief. “I felt good and relieved that it wasn’t anything, and maybe I was right that it was just a weird birthmark,” she recalled.

Despite the initial test results, Siley continued to scrutinize the mark. She reviewed old photographs and recognized that it had not always been present. The mark had not only increased in size but also developed jagged edges, raising further concerns. According to the Cleveland Clinic, distinguishing between benign skin marks and melanoma can be challenging as melanomas are typically asymmetrical, mottled in color, and have irregular borders. The clinic suggests using the ABCDEs of skin cancer—Asymmetry, Border, Color, Diameter, and Evolving—as a guide for recognizing potential issues.

During her next annual checkup, Siley insisted on a biopsy despite the previous negative results. Her persistence paid off when she was diagnosed with Stage II melanoma. “It was a horrifying discovery, but I was grateful it was found early,” she stated. Melanoma is among the most common cancers in individuals under 30, particularly affecting women, and approximately 30 percent of cases originate in existing moles, as noted by the Cleveland Clinic.

Following her diagnosis, Siley underwent surgery to remove the melanoma six weeks later. Initially told that the procedure would last 45 minutes while she remained awake, the surgeon opted for general anesthesia due to the melanoma’s proximity to her eye. The surgery ultimately lasted two hours, revealing that the cancer was more extensive than first anticipated. “I was in bed for about a week after the surgery,” she explained. “My eye was swollen shut, I didn’t have much of an appetite, and I also think I was slightly depressed with everything going on.”

The surgical scars extend from Siley’s cheek to behind her ear, and she had stitches for several weeks. Fortunately, she has since made a full recovery and now emphasizes the importance of being vigilant about skin health. With an impressive 99 percent cure rate when caught early, Siley encourages others to seek medical advice if they notice any changes in their skin. “There’s nothing you will regret by getting it checked,” she advised.

Siley shared her experience on TikTok, where her story garnered significant attention, accumulating over 710,600 views and more than 9,100 likes. “I get so much advice on how to cover up my scars,” she noted, adding, “I’m a survivor, and I think these scars have helped others realize how important it is to take care of their skin.”

Now grateful for the support of her family, Siley reflects on her journey with a sense of purpose. “I’m alive and here for my kids, and that’s all that matters,” she said, reinforcing the message that early detection can be life-saving.
