Olean General Hospital Performs First Robotic Kidney Surgery
Olean General Hospital (OGH) in Olean, New York, achieved a significant milestone by performing its first robotic-assisted surgery on January 20, 2024. This groundbreaking procedure involved a laparoscopic radical nephrectomy, where a kidney was removed to treat renal cell carcinoma, the most prevalent form of kidney cancer, according to the Kidney Cancer Association.
The introduction of the da Vinci Xi robotic surgical system marks a new era for OGH, which is affiliated with Kaleida Health. The hospital’s investment in this advanced technology allows for minimally invasive surgery, requiring only a small incision, thereby facilitating quicker recovery times and reducing patient discomfort.
The patient, who has opted to remain anonymous for privacy reasons, expressed satisfaction with the procedure. “Considering the procedure, the overall experience couldn’t have been better,” the individual stated. “My recovery was fast, and my pain levels were very manageable. I chose Olean General Hospital because of the quality of care I would receive and the close proximity to home.”
Dr. Brian Dinerman, the urologist who performed the surgery, has extensive experience in robotic-assisted procedures, having conducted hundreds at various facilities. “Dr. Dinerman is a skilled surgeon who, along with his team, put my mind at ease as the first patient at OGH to undergo robotic-assisted surgery,” the patient added. “It’s going to save people from having to drive far outside the area for these types of surgeries.”
Dr. Dinerman, who is affiliated with Western New York Urology Associates and serves as a clinical assistant professor at the Jacobs School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo, emphasized the advantages of robotic surgery. He noted that patients typically benefit from shorter hospital stays, reduced pain, less blood loss, and faster recovery times due to the precision and flexibility offered by robotic technology.
“This technology allows patients to receive state-of-the-art surgical care close to home,” Dr. Dinerman remarked. The local availability of this advanced surgical option is particularly beneficial during the harsh winter months in Western New York, alleviating travel concerns for patients and their families.
Investment in Local Healthcare Enhances Surgical Options
Olean General Hospital President Bradley Chapman highlighted the significance of this development for the local healthcare system. “You often hear negative commentary about rural healthcare, but we have some incredible resources here that many rural communities do not,” Chapman stated. “Robotic surgery is one of them, along with a strong network of skilled surgeons who can use this technology to deliver high-quality care.”
Chapman also expressed optimism about the potential for attracting new talent to the region. “We’re excited to leverage robotic surgery as a recruitment tool for new surgeons and physicians coming out of residency programs,” he explained. “This is the technology they train on, and it helps ensure we continue providing advanced care in our region.”
The da Vinci Xi system, which was previously used at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital in Amherst, cost approximately $2.3 million when new. OGH officials acknowledged the cost savings achieved through their affiliation with Kaleida Health, which enabled the acquisition of this cutting-edge technology.
Other hospitals within the region have also adopted similar da Vinci systems, fostering a network of training opportunities for surgeons across facilities. For example, Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville, part of the University of Rochester system, received a similar robotic surgical system in 2024. Additionally, UPMC Chautauqua in Jamestown, associated with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, utilizes a da Vinci system as well.
As the healthcare landscape continues to evolve, the implementation of robotic surgery at Olean General Hospital represents a significant advancement in local medical capabilities, ensuring that residents have access to high-quality surgical care without the need to travel long distances.
