Poorer Areas of England Face Higher Emergency Admissions for Lung Issues

Research indicates that individuals from the most deprived areas of England are significantly more likely to require emergency hospital care for serious lung conditions compared to their wealthier counterparts. According to an analysis of NHS admissions data for November 2023 conducted by Asthma + Lung UK, people from these disadvantaged backgrounds are 56% more likely to be admitted for emergency treatment. Furthermore, they are 62% more likely to be readmitted within 39 days, a statistic linked to an increased risk of mortality.

The study highlights a troubling disparity, revealing that individuals in deprived areas are nearly twice as likely to be hospitalized for respiratory conditions. Notably, regions such as Blackpool, Manchester, Hastings, and Burnley report the highest rates of admissions for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a set of diseases that cause significant breathing difficulties, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Alarmingly, more than 20,000 people in England die from COPD each year.

Dr. Hugo Farne, a respiratory consultant at Imperial College London, emphasized the critical nature of these findings. He remarked, “The figures lay bare a stark and avoidable injustice in respiratory health.” Dr. Farne pointed out that nearly 500,000 respiratory admissions could be prevented annually if the health disparities related to deprivation were addressed.

He stressed the importance of timely diagnosis, smoking cessation support, pulmonary rehabilitation, clean air initiatives, and adequately funded community respiratory services. “These resources are least accessible in the areas with the greatest health burdens,” he noted. Dr. Farne called for a focused effort to tackle COPD outcomes by addressing health inequalities through sustained investment and coordinated health and social care efforts.

As the NHS braces for what is anticipated to be its most challenging winter yet, flu cases continue to surge. Data from NHS England reveals that by the end of last week, an average of 3,140 patients were hospitalized daily due to flu, marking an 18% increase from the previous week. This time last year, the average was 2,629 patients, while in 2021, it was just 648.

Sarah Sleet, chief executive of Asthma + Lung UK, warned that many patients currently in hospitals for flu complications are likely to have underlying lung conditions, such as COPD. She pointed out that individuals from lower-income groups face a higher risk of mortality this winter. “Poor housing, smoking, and exposure to air pollution increase the likelihood of developing COPD, but deprivation also influences disease progression,” Sleet explained.

She further noted that delayed diagnoses and inadequate care contribute significantly to the problem, with essential diagnostic tests often unavailable in certain regions. Areas with high population density and pressure on healthcare services frequently struggle to provide basic lung testing and care, exacerbating the issue. “Lung health is in a critical state in this country, and we know what changes need to be made; they just need implementing,” Sleet added, advocating for a dedicated national strategy aimed at improving respiratory outcomes.

Previous analyses of NHS data have shown that serious respiratory conditions lead to more emergency admissions than any other medical issues. The urgent need for reform in respiratory healthcare is evident as the NHS faces increasing pressures, and calls for action grow louder. NHS England has been approached for comment regarding these alarming trends.
