Pullman’s Military Hill Pool Reopens as Schweitzer Wellbeing Center

The Military Hill indoor pool in Pullman will reopen on Monday, November 6, 2023, under its new name, the Schweitzer Wellbeing Center. This facility was previously known as the Pullman Aquatic and Fitness Center and has undergone a significant transition following its acquisition by Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) at the end of last month.

Located at 500 NW Greyhound Way, the pool was formerly owned by the Pullman School District and operated by the city. The decision for SEL to purchase the aquatic center was made after growing financial concerns regarding its maintenance. SEL founder Edmund O. Schweitzer III and his wife, Beatriz Schweitzer, initiated the acquisition process last year, recognizing the importance of keeping the facility accessible to the public.

Investment and Upgrades Planned for the Facility

SEL has committed a total of $5 million towards the pool renovation, a move that aims to ensure its continued operation. According to a December announcement from the school district, this investment will play a vital role in maintaining the center’s services for the community.

As part of the transition, Kristin Gehring, operations manager for the SEL Family Center, mentioned in an email that the property team is actively working on plans to enhance the facility. “These improvements will include updates to enhance aesthetics, safety, and energy efficiency,” Gehring noted. “We’re excited about these changes and will share updates with the community soon.”

In addition to upgrades, SEL has announced plans to extend the facility’s hours and programming. Gehring confirmed that the new hours are available on the center’s website, swcpullman.com. The staff is currently finalizing additional programming options and looks forward to sharing more details as they become available.

Celebrating a Milestone with Special Membership Offers

The aquatic center has been a community staple for over 25 years, originally funded by a $2.5 million donation from the Schweitzer family. To celebrate its reopening, the center is offering new monthly memberships at a 25% discount during the first three months for those who join. Day passes will also be available starting on the reopening date.

All membership details can be accessed via swcpullman.com. Gehring clarified that the city did not sell memberships extending beyond December 2025, ensuring a smooth transition for patrons. Pullman Parks & Recreation representatives have been working with members to resolve any outstanding membership issues.
