SGLT-2 Inhibitors Reduce Risk of Diabetic Foot Complications
A recent population-based study has revealed that adults diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (T2D) who initiate treatment with sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors experience a lower risk of developing serious diabetic foot complications compared to those using glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. This finding underscores the importance of treatment choice in managing diabetes and its associated risks.
The research, which involved a substantial cohort of patients, indicates that the use of SGLT-2 inhibitors may offer an additional protective benefit against diabetic foot problems, a common and serious complication of T2D. Specifically, patients who began their treatment with SGLT-2 inhibitors were found to have a slightly reduced incidence of neuropathy and other foot-related issues.
