Assemblyman Smullen Announces $44 Million in Library Grants
Assemblyman Robert Smullen, representing New York’s 118th Assembly District, has announced the recipients of five library construction grants aimed at modernizing facilities in his district. The funding is part of a larger initiative supported by the New York State Education Department and the New York State Library, which approved 212 construction projects statewide backed by a total of $44 million from the FY 2024-25 State Budget.
The awarded grants will enhance libraries across the district, enabling them to better serve the community. “It is inspiring to see these grant monies awarded to libraries throughout the 118th Assembly District to help bring these historic centers for reading and learning into the 21st century,” Smullen stated.
Details of Grant Awards
The library construction grant award recipients in Assembly District 118 include:
– The Prospect Free Library in Oneida County, which received $12,750 to replace nine windows and install vinyl siding on its exterior.
– The Frankfort Free Library in Herkimer County, awarded $82,912 to remove existing windows and install new energy-efficient models.
– The Old Forge Library, also in Herkimer County, received $144,559 to install a hydronic geothermal heating and cooling system under its parking lot.
– The Gloversville Public Library in Fulton County, which received $104,626 to install security cameras for both internal and external monitoring.
– The Johnstown Public Library, also in Fulton County, was awarded $251,804 to construct an exterior hardscape, rebuild its historic entrance, and create a multipurpose outdoor space.
The Importance of Libraries
Smullen emphasized the vital role libraries play in community life. “Our libraries provide people of all ages with access to knowledge and spaces to explore literature across a variety of genres,” he noted. He expressed enthusiasm for the renovation projects, which aim to modernize libraries ensuring their relevance for years to come.
The 118th Assembly District includes parts of Hamilton, Montgomery, Fulton, Herkimer, and Oneida counties, showcasing a commitment to enhancing public resources in these regions. The modernization efforts reflect a broader vision to support educational and community engagement through improved library facilities.
