Community Mourns the Passing of Dr. Thomas “Tom” Russell, 86
Dr. Thomas “Tom” Russell II, aged 86, passed away peacefully at his home in Stillwater, MN, on January 9, 2026. Known for his dedication to family and medicine, Tom’s legacy is marked by his compassionate care for patients and his commitment to his community.
Born on July 28, 1939, in Minneapolis, Tom was the son of Kenneth and Gladys Amberg Russell. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Judith (Judie) Russell, their three children, Thomas (Tom), Katherine (Katie), and Molly, and one granddaughter, Mckenzie Ferguson. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Marilyn Mortensen.
Career and Contributions
Tom Russell was a lifelong Catholic and a devoted member of both Holy Spirit Church in St. Paul and Saint Michael’s Church in Stillwater. His educational journey began at St. Thomas University, where he studied pre-med before advancing to the University of Minnesota Medical School. Following his academic pursuits, he completed a residency in internal medicine at the Mayo Clinic and further specialized in cardiology at the University of Oregon Medical Center.
In addition to his medical career, Tom served as a Major in the U.S. Air Force, where he held the position of hospital director at Clovis Air Force Base in New Mexico. His military service exemplified his commitment to healthcare and his country.
Memorial Services and Legacy
Funeral service details are pending and will be announced at O’Halloran and Murphy Funeral Home, located at 575 Snelling Avenue South, St. Paul, MN 55116. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the University of Minnesota Medical School Scholarship Fund, reflecting Tom’s dedication to education and the next generation of medical professionals.
Tom Russell will be remembered for his deep love of family, passion for hunting, and fondness for Labradors. His adventurous spirit led him to travel the world, and he formed lasting bonds with many nieces, nephews, and friends. Those who knew him will cherish the great care he provided to his patients and the warmth he brought to those around him.
As the community mourns the loss of this esteemed physician and beloved family man, Tom’s impact on both his profession and personal life will undoubtedly be felt for years to come.
