Great Plains Food Bank Receives $75,000 Freezer Donation for Food Hub
The Great Plains Food Bank has expressed gratitude to Fairchild Equipment, a local machinery company, for its generous donation of a walk-in freezer valued at approximately $75,000. This donation, which was previously housed at Fairchild’s new factory, will play a vital role in supporting a regional grocery and local food hub initiative spearheaded by the North Dakota Rural Electric Cooperatives Foundation.
Supporting Local Food Initiatives
The newly donated freezer is set to serve as a critical component of the food hub, aimed at assisting small-town grocery stores in maintaining their operations. This initiative is particularly important in addressing food access challenges faced by rural communities. According to the Great Plains Food Bank, the freezer will be put into service once the regional food hub facility becomes operational.
Darby Njos, the Communication and Marketing Manager for the Great Plains Food Bank, highlighted the significance of this collaboration. “We’re really just grateful for Fairchild Equipment’s commitment to giving back to their community and that we were able to be that connecting piece to keep this local,” Njos stated. This partnership exemplifies the impact of community engagement in fostering food security across the state.
Addressing Food Deserts in North Dakota
This donation is not only a testament to corporate responsibility but also a proactive step towards lessening food deserts within North Dakota. By equipping local food hubs with essential resources, the initiative aims to ensure that all residents have access to nutritious food options.
Njos further emphasized the broader implications of the donation, stating, “By giving this to the association, they are able to continue to work to lessen food deserts across our state, which will ultimately benefit us all.” The collaborative efforts of the Great Plains Food Bank and Fairchild Equipment represent a significant stride toward enhancing food availability in underserved areas.
The Great Plains Food Bank continues to seek innovative solutions and partnerships to combat food insecurity and enhance the lives of individuals in rural communities. As the regional food hub initiative progresses, the impact of this walk-in freezer is expected to resonate widely, supporting the local economy and fostering community resilience.
