UN Condemns Guinea-Bissau Coup, Calls for Constitutional Restoration
The United Nations has condemned the military coup that occurred in Guinea-Bissau, which took place shortly after the nation held its national elections. The UN asserts that the coup, which resulted in the ousting of elected authorities, represents a serious violation of the country’s constitutional order and democratic principles.
In a statement released on January 15, 2025, UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed deep concern over the situation. He emphasized that the coup not only disrupts the democratic process but also endangers the stability and future of Guinea-Bissau. Guterres called on the military leaders to restore constitutional order and respect the will of the people expressed through their votes.
The coup has drawn widespread international condemnation. Various nations and regional organizations have echoed the UN’s sentiments, urging for a swift return to democratic governance. The African Union and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have both called for the immediate reinstatement of the elected government, stressing the importance of upholding democratic norms.
In the lead-up to the coup, Guinea-Bissau had just completed its national elections, which were viewed as a critical step towards consolidating democracy in the country. The recent developments have raised fears of potential instability and violence, echoing the political turmoil that has plagued Guinea-Bissau in previous decades.
The UN has a history of involvement in Guinea-Bissau, having previously supported efforts to stabilize the country and promote democratic governance. This latest coup is particularly alarming given the progress made in recent years towards establishing a more stable political environment.
Guterres urged the international community to remain vigilant and support the people of Guinea-Bissau during this challenging time. He reiterated the importance of dialogue and negotiation in resolving the crisis, emphasizing that the future of the nation should be determined by its citizens and their democratic choices.
As the situation develops, the international community will be closely monitoring the actions of the military and the response of the civilian population. The UN remains committed to facilitating a peaceful resolution that respects the democratic rights of the people of Guinea-Bissau.
