Caltech Research Building Faces Strong Opposition at Review Meeting

The proposed Caltech research building project is set to encounter considerable opposition during a review meeting scheduled for January 27, 2024. The Pasadena Design Commission will evaluate the concept design for a four-story structure at 1364 E. Green St., adjacent to St. Philip the Apostle Church and school. The commission previously voted to continue the review process, indicating ongoing concerns regarding the project.

The research building, which will cover 93,539 square feet and include 260 subterranean parking spaces, has received a recommendation for approval from city officials, as noted in a staff report. However, the project requires the removal of two protected street trees: a California fan palm and an incense cedar. Approval for this removal was granted by the Urban Forestry Advisory Committee in September.

Caltech describes the facility, referred to as the “innovation center,” as a combination of research and development office space with laboratories designed to support the university’s expanding startup ecosystem. According to Caltech’s website, the center aims to minimize potential traffic, air quality, and noise impacts while maximizing job opportunities and economic benefits for the local community.

Despite these assurances, the project has faced significant backlash from the nearby church and school community. At a December meeting, representatives from St. Philip the Apostle Church voiced concerns about increased traffic, security issues, and the overall size of the building. An online petition opposing the project has gained traction, amassing over 1,300 signatures as of January 22.

In a letter dated January 23, Pastor Tony Gomez expressed growing discontent with the project following a detailed review by parishioners with expertise in planning and development. The letter conveyed that the parish could no longer support the project in its current form. Gomez encouraged community members to attend the upcoming commission meeting to share their perspectives.

The Pasadena Design Commission is set to convene on January 27 at 6:30 p.m. at the Pasadena Convention Center, located at 300 E. Green St. This meeting will provide an opportunity for community members to voice their opinions and concerns regarding the proposed Caltech development.
