Timothy Patrick Scully, a respected educator and principal, passed away on December 13, 2023, at the age of 78. Surrounded by family, Scully left behind a legacy of dedication to education that spanned over three decades. Known for his transformative leadership as Principal of North Torrance High School, he was honored as the California Principal of the Year for the 2001-2002 school year, a testament to his commitment to student success and community engagement.

Educational Innovations and Contributions

During his extensive career, Scully was not only a principal but also taught English and thanatology, and served as the freshman football coach at West Torrance High School. He was known for implementing various initiatives that enhanced the educational experience. These included hosting parents’ nights, organizing college recruiting sessions, and facilitating meetings between students and community leaders. His efforts fostered a sense of understanding and diversity within the student body, leading to the establishment of a human relations commission and diversity conventions.

Scully earned a Doctor of Education from the University of Southern California in 2003, where he received an award for his dissertation on education finance. His academic contributions and innovative practices made a significant impact on the schools he served.

A Life Beyond Education

A devoted fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Scully celebrated their back-to-back championships, showcasing his passion for sports. He is remembered fondly by family and friends, including his wife, Margaret, his sons, Sean and Jason, and his grandchildren, Timothy and Rose.

In addition to his professional achievements, Scully bravely fought against multiple myeloma for 24 years. His experience inspired him to become an active fundraiser for City of Hope, contributing to cancer research and treatment initiatives.

A memorial service will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery and Mortuary in Culver City, California, on December 29, 2023, at 13:00. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name to City of Hope are appreciated, reflecting his enduring commitment to helping others even in his passing.
