Nobel Laureate Joel Mokyr Shares Insights on Human Progress

Joel Mokyr, a Nobel laureate renowned for his work in economics and history, engaged with students during a Q&A session on Tuesday evening, discussing pivotal themes such as technology, economic growth, and the trajectory of human progress. The event was moderated by Amy Stanley, a history professor, and organized by the history and economics departments in collaboration with the Roberta Buffett Institute for Global Affairs.

Mokyr commended the students, remarking, “This is some of the finest bodies of undergraduates to find at any university in the United States, and I fully trust it to remain so.” His openness to dialogue created an environment where students felt encouraged to challenge his views. Stanley noted that Mokyr’s willingness to accept differing opinions exemplifies a “wonderful model for learning.”

Much of the evening focused on the nature of progress, with Mokyr fielding inquiries about technological advancements and their implications for humanity. He cited the Industrial Revolution as a significant turning point, stating, “We are not the species that we used to be.” He elaborated, saying, “The entire biological structure of human life is changing before our eyes.” Mokyr emphasized that these changes have greatly improved humanity’s ability to meet basic needs, such as food and shelter.

While acknowledging skepticism about the limits of human innovation, Mokyr asserted that “the best is still to come.” He remarked, “Maybe the low-hanging fruits have been picked. But science gives us a ladder to climb higher and higher in the trees.” This optimistic perspective on the future of innovation highlighted the necessity of embracing change, even as it poses challenges.

Mokyr drew parallels between historical technological shifts and current advancements, such as artificial intelligence. He explained that while innovations can lead to displacement, they are essential for progress. “There will be some victims, and we have to have safety nets to help these people in any way we can,” he said. “But we can’t stop it, and we shouldn’t stop it, because this is what progress looks like.”

As students grappled with how to navigate their career choices in an unpredictable job market, Mokyr offered practical advice. He urged them not to “overspecialize,” advocating for a flexible approach to learning that allows for adaptability in an evolving landscape. “If you specialize, and you’re really good at it but you’re not good at anything else, then you will take the risk of becoming like a radiologist who’s going to be replaced by an AI machine,” he cautioned.

At 79 years old, Mokyr expressed enthusiasm for the future, stating he would choose to be born in 2026 due to the vast opportunities available and an increasing capacity for individuals to lead fulfilling lives. Student Christina Cha reflected on Mokyr’s insights, noting a newfound understanding of global interconnectedness. “Just taking a step back and looking at the world from the larger picture, I feel like there’s so much that is going on and that I could possibly get involved in,” she said.

Mokyr concluded by celebrating the current environment as a “free and open market for ideas,” encouraging students to share their thoughts and innovations. “We are all living in a world in which ideas pop up,” he asserted. “Take advantage of it. If you have an idea, put it out in the marketplace.” This call to action resonated with those in attendance, embodying the spirit of inquiry and progress that Mokyr champions.
