Remembering Vincent R. Di Fiore: A Life of Service and Song

Vincent R. Di Fiore, a dedicated educator, community leader, and gifted singer, passed away at the age of 91. Born in Flushing, New York, he was the second child of Vincent and Philomena Di Fiore. Vincent grew up in Corona and Kingston, New York, where he garnered accolades in singing and athletics. His journey took a significant turn when his family relocated to Santa Barbara, California, just before his junior year of high school.

Vincent attended the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science. He was commissioned as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army ROTC and later completed a Master’s degree at California State University, Long Beach. It was during his time at UCSB that he met Paula Winkler, who would become his wife. Their paths crossed at a Sigma Pi fraternity event, where they connected through music. The couple married in August 1953, enjoying a partnership that lasted for an impressive 71 years, until Paula’s passing in December 2024.

Career and Community Involvement

Vincent dedicated over 30 years to the Torrance Unified School District, serving in various roles including Counselor at Torrance High School, Vice Principal at West High School, and Principal at both Parkway Elementary and Kurt T. Shery High School. His commitment to education left a lasting impact on countless students and colleagues.

After retiring, Vincent continued to contribute to his community by serving for eight years on the Rolling Hills Estates Planning Commission. He also showcased his theatrical talents, performing in lead roles with the Prime Time Players. Known for his beautiful singing voice, Vincent shared his gift at family weddings and church performances, participating in Los Cancioneros and the St. Luke’s Chancel Choir right up until his last days.

A Life Well-Lived

Vincent led a fulfilling life, enjoying regular tennis matches with friends and traveling extensively with Paula. He cherished time spent with his family, which included his children: Donna, Dean (Esther), Diane (Jerry Hester), Vincent, and Denise (Jon Shuman). He was also a proud grandfather to Elise, Jeffrey (Claire), Michael, Vincent, Carlo, Luca, and Max, and a great-grandfather to Nora.

In a heartfelt tribute to both Vincent and Paula, a Celebration of Life will be held at St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church in Rolling Hills Estates on February 21, 2025, at 11 AM. The event will include a reception following the service, allowing family and friends to honor their memory and celebrate a life rich in love, learning, and music.

Vincent R. Di Fiore will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of service, love, and song will continue to inspire future generations.
