Thwaites Glacier Faces Imminent Collapse, Threatening Coastal Areas

The **Thwaites Glacier** in Antarctica, often referred to as the “Doomsday Glacier,” is on the brink of catastrophic collapse, according to a study from the **International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration** (ITGC). This significant ice shelf is retreating at an alarming rate, and its potential failure could lead to a staggering **11 feet** increase in global sea levels, posing dire risks to millions living in coastal communities.

Research conducted by a team from the **University of Manitoba** analyzed satellite data spanning from **2002 to 2022**. Their findings revealed extensive cracking within the glacier, specifically around a shear zone, which is critical to its structural stability. Over the past two decades, the total length of fractures in the glacier has grown from approximately **100 miles** to over **200 miles**. While the average length of individual fractures has decreased, this suggests new stresses are acting on the glacier, further compromising its integrity.

Alarming Developments Below Water

The situation is equally concerning beneath the ice. A recent study indicates that warming ocean waters are rapidly eroding the ice shelves, including Thwaites. These changes can occur within hours or days, driven by swirling eddies of water that can span up to **six miles** across.

Researchers have identified a feedback loop where cold water from the melting ice interacts with warmer, saltier ocean currents. This interaction increases ocean turbulence, leading to further ice melt. **Lia Siegelman**, an assistant professor at **UC San Diego**, emphasized the urgency of this issue, stating, “This positive feedback loop could gain intensity in a warming climate.”

Future Projections and Urgent Action Needed

The ITGC’s **2025 report** confirms the glacier’s retreat has accelerated significantly over the past 40 years. Although a complete collapse may not be imminent, the data indicates the glacier will continue to retreat more rapidly throughout the **21st** and **22nd centuries**.

The report underscores the necessity for immediate and sustained climate change mitigation efforts. The ITGC asserts that the best strategy to delay ice loss and prevent similar destabilization in other regions of **East Antarctica** is through decarbonization.
