Jimmie Johnson, a seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, announced that his final race in the series will take place at the 2027 Daytona 500. The announcement came on Saturday, just one day before the 69th running of “The Great American Race.” Johnson, who has two Daytona 500 victories to his name, made clear his intentions to focus on his role as majority owner of Legacy Motor Club.

“Next February, I’ll make my final start in the Cup Series in Daytona,” Johnson stated. He reflected on his career, saying, “I’ve been very fortunate to accomplish more than I ever imagined in this sport.” Johnson expressed gratitude for the past six years, which he described as a period allowing him the freedom to choose his competitions and gain clarity on where his efforts are most needed.

In addition to his upcoming final race, Johnson is open to participating in other NASCAR national series beyond 2027. He has enjoyed a remarkable career, winning the Daytona 500 in both 2016 and 2013, and recently finishing third in the 2025 race. Overall, Johnson holds an impressive record of 83 Cup Series victories.

Tyler Gibbs, president of Toyota Racing Development USA, praised Johnson, stating, “Jimmie Johnson is a champion in every aspect of his life – with his family, as the leader of Legacy Motor Club, and with his incredible success behind the wheel.” Gibbs emphasized the significance of Johnson’s contributions to the sport and expressed excitement for their future collaborations.

Johnson, now 50 years old, had stepped back from full-time competition after the 2020 season but has continued to participate in a limited Cup Series schedule. His last victory was recorded in 2017, marking the end of an era for the legendary driver.

As he prepares to conclude this chapter of his iconic NASCAR career, the motorsport community is poised to celebrate Johnson’s remarkable legacy. His decision to retire from the Cup Series highlights both his personal journey and the impact he has made on the sport over the years.
