Ludvig Aberg Takes Command with 63 at The Players Championship

Ludvig Aberg surged to the top of the leaderboard at The Players Championship, carding a stunning 9-under 63 at TPC Sawgrass on March 10, 2024. This impressive round gave him a two-shot lead over fellow competitor Xander Schauffele, who finished with a solid score of 65.

Aberg’s remarkable performance featured a blistering start, where he reached 5 under through just four holes. His round included two chip-ins, one for birdie on the fourth hole and another for eagle on the par-5 ninth, which contributed to a front-nine score of 29, equalling the course record. Even after a mishap on one chip, Aberg managed to recover and sink an 8-foot putt for bogey. He concluded the day at 12 under overall, solidifying his position as a frontrunner in the tournament.

“I think my mind is very good when it’s simple, and when things are very easy, and that’s what I’ve felt like I’ve been able to do over the last couple of weeks,” Aberg said, reflecting on his recent form. Despite having practiced on the Stadium Course just days prior to the tournament, Aberg, who has made Ponte Vedra Beach his home since finishing at Texas Tech, demonstrated a strong command of the course.

In contrast, Scottie Scheffler, the world’s number one player, faced a tense day. He managed to secure his spot for the weekend after a nail-biting finish. Scheffler struggled with two missed birdie opportunities and faced challenges on the 14th hole, where he recorded a bogey. He also narrowly avoided disaster on the par-5 16th with a missed 30-inch par putt. At that point, he was at 2 over for the day and needed to navigate the challenging 17th hole, known for its island green.

Scheffler found solid ground on the 17th and made par but faced the daunting 18th hole needing at least par to stay in the competition. He executed a strong 3-wood shot down the fairway and hit his approach to 8 feet, ultimately making birdie for a total score of 73. This allowed him to finish at 1 over overall, joining Rory McIlroy, who also made the cut with a score of 71.

McIlroy, ranked second in the world, showed improvement as his back continues to heal, though he struggled with his putting throughout the round. His birdie on the par-5 ninth ensured he would compete over the weekend, finishing with a total of 145.

Xander Schauffele’s day was marked by a lone bogey on the par-3 13th, where a careless three-putt resulted in a dropped shot. Despite this, Schauffele hit all 14 fairways and managed to maintain strong momentum throughout his round. “Definitely nice to hit all of them, especially on this property,” he noted. “For the most part, I felt like I was in control and felt like I was attacking the golf course versus playing defensive.”

The conditions at TPC Sawgrass were conducive to scoring, with sunny skies, light winds, and receptive greens. Cameron Young, who recently contended at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, turned in a solid performance with a score of 67, placing him three shots behind Aberg. Young, who is still finding his footing at The Players, expressed confidence in his game despite past challenges on the course.

“I feel if you’re not decisive, if you’re unsure of what you want to do, it can really kind of rear its head at you,” he said. Young’s perspective on the course reflects the complexity of Sawgrass, which has proven difficult for many players.

Justin Thomas, recovering from back surgery, showed significant improvement with a 68, bringing his total to 136. He highlighted a moment of brilliance with a pitch-and-run eagle on the par-5 11th. “Pretty sick chip,” Thomas remarked, showcasing his confidence in his short game.
