Portland Earns Top Spot in Final Varsity Maine Boys Basketball Poll

Portland High School has claimed the top position in the final Varsity Maine boys basketball poll for the 2025-26 season. This designation follows an impressive performance in the Class A state championship, where Portland defeated Camden Hills with a score of 76-60 at the Cross Insurance Arena. The Bulldogs’ victory not only crowned them champions but also solidified their status as the best team in Maine high school basketball this season.

Throughout the season, rankings shifted frequently, with Camden Hills, Sanford, South Portland, and Windham all taking turns at the top. Despite not leading the rankings for an extended period, Portland’s resilience shone through in the Class A South tournament, where they overcame formidable opponents, including South Portland and Sanford. Their triumph over Camden Hills in the championship game was particularly significant, marking a decisive end to their campaign.

Final Rankings Reflect Season’s Intensity

The final Varsity Maine boys basketball poll encapsulates the competitive nature of the season. Gardiner, the Class B champion, ranked third after a strong finish, having spent much of the season in the lower half of the rankings. Fort Kent also made headlines by securing ninth place in the poll, the first time the school has appeared in this ranking, following a notable victory in the Class C championship against Maranacook.
