Rainier Mountaineers Fall Short Against Elma Eagles, 59-44
The Rainier Mountaineers suffered a setback in their non-league matchup against the Elma Eagles on March 4, 2024, ending the game with a score of 59-44. Despite winning two of the four quarters, Rainier struggled significantly in the first and third quarters, which ultimately determined the outcome of the game.
Elma established control early, leading 19-13 at the end of the first quarter. They maintained their momentum, outscoring Rainier 14-9 in the second quarter to head into halftime with a 33-22 advantage. The Mountaineers’ performance in the third quarter was particularly concerning, as they managed to score only eight points compared to Elma’s 18. This left Rainier trailing by 14 points going into the final quarter.
The scoring for Elma was led by McGaffey, who contributed 15 points, while Webb and Moe added 13 and 9 points, respectively. Rainier’s efforts were spearheaded by Peyton Sheaffer, who scored 13 points, and Jordan Pringle, who contributed 10 points.
Mountaineers Struggle to Find Offensive Rhythm
Despite winning the second and fourth quarters by a slim margin of one point each, Rainier’s inability to score consistently in critical periods proved detrimental. They found themselves down by six points after the first quarter and struggled to recover throughout the game.
Rainier head coach Ben Sheaffer reflected on the match, stating, “We battled against a physical, experienced team, but just had a difficult time manufacturing points in the second half. This was a great non-league test that we will learn from.” The loss marked the third consecutive defeat for the Mountaineers, who now hold a record of 8-9 and are facing a crucial stretch with only three regular season games remaining.
The team will look to bounce back as they return to league action on March 6, 2024, when they host MWP at home. With their playoff hopes on the line, the focus for Rainier will be to improve their offensive execution and regain momentum in the remaining games of the season.
